With Resident Evil 7 out, many people are interested in diving into the famous horror series. However, with seven previous #VideoGames out, not including side games and spin-offs, it might be a bit hard to keep up with everything that's happened in the universe before #ResidentEvil7. That's where we come in.
Here's Every Insane Thing That's Happened So Far In Resident Evil - Part One
This section will be covering the #ResidentEvil games from zero to three, including the spin-off game Code Veronica but not including Outbreak, because no one cared about Outbreak.
'Resident Evil 0'
After a series of cannibalistic murders begins to plague the forests outside of Raccoon City, a team of vaguely defined soldiers and/or police are sent to investigate them. The first team sent out, inexplicably called 'Bravo Team' manage to crash their helicopter like a bunch of idiots. Rebecca Chambers, a member of the team, wanders off and finds a train infested by zombies. Surprisingly, for a #horror character, she doesn't immediately die. There she encounters Billy Coen, a former marine and current escaped convict, who was arrested for 23 murders and crimes against fashion.
The two of them team up and discover a secret base full of leech monsters, where they learn about the progenitor virus. This is an ancient African virus that a doctor named James Marcus combined with leech DNA to create the t-Virus, short for the tyrant virus, which is supposed to cause rapid mutation in organisms but mostly makes zombies.
No one is really sure how that works, and James Marcus isn't telling because he died quite a while ago and was replaced with a shapeshifting leech monster. Rebecca and Billy manage to defeat the monster and escape the base. Rebecca promises Billy that she'll report that he died in the explosion and Billy promises never to show up in the series again.
'Resident Evil 1'
A second team are sent out to look for Bravo team, they're called 'Alpha' team despite being the second team. They land, discover the downed helicopter of Bravo team and then get a little bit eaten by mutant dogs. The surviving members of the team flee into a spooky looking mansion after their pilot abandons them.
The remaining members of Alpha team are Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker, who definitely isn't evil. They discover the dead bodies of Bravo team as well as a lot of zombies. It turns out Edward E. Spencer, the founder of the Umbrella Corporation, built the mansion with the help of a genius architect. After filling the mansion with annoying and impractical puzzles, Edward killed the architect and his entire family. Edward is a dick.
The reason for the puzzles and nefarious murder was to hide a secret underground laboratory beneath the mansion. Which is a different secret underground laboratory than the first one. Which apparently wasn't important enough to build a scary puzzle mansion on top of. At some point, the secret underground lab had the inevitable containment accident that every secret underground lab has and the staff are turned into zombies.
It turns out that Wesker is secretly working for the Umbrella corporation and engineered the entire events of the plot in order to cover up the evidence of the lab and failure. Apparently the best way to cover up evidence is to bring a bunch of government agents there and hope they die. Then it turns out Wesker is secretly working for another secret organization and fakes his own death. Wesker is a dick. The rest of the team kills a big boss nasty called the Tyrant and blows up the mansion, before flying away on the helicopter piloted by Brad, who abandoned them at the start of the game. Brad is a dick.
'Resident Evil 2'
Two months later, the events of the first Resident Evil have been covered up by a corrupt police chief, because no one thought to call the FBI. A T-Virus outbreak takes over Raccoon City because Umbrella corporation are extremely bad at basic workplace Health and Safety. Leon Kennedy, a rookie police officer, runs into college student Claire Redfield, who is in Raccoon City looking for her brother Chris.
Chris and Claire team up and then split up for no real reason. Chris meets Ada Wong, who is looking for her boyfriend, a researcher at Umbrella Corp. Claire meets a little girl named Sherry. It's revealed that Sherry's father Birkin worked at Umbrella and was developing a new virus called the G-Virus, presumably short for the gyrant virus.
Birkin planned to betray Umbrella, but because literally everyone plans to betray Umbrella, the company sent a team to kill Birkin and steal the virus. Birkin injected himself with the virus, turning himself into a mutated monstrosity. But he also concealed a sample in Sherry's locket. After turning into a monster, Birkin hunts Sherry down and implants a mutated embryo in her that will give birth to more monsters. Birkin is a dick.
Ada is revealed to be a spy sent to steal Umbrella's secrets, which shouldn't be that hard since about half their staff seem to be planning to betray them. Shortly after, she's killed while saving Leon's life. She confesses her love to him despite knowing him for about 20 minutes and having a boyfriend, then dies.
Claire and Leon manage to synthesize a cure for Sherry and blow Birkin up with the self destruct function of a train, because I guess for some reason the person who designed the train wanted to be able to blow it up at will.
'Resident Evil 3: Nemesis'
While all this is going on, Jill Valentine is also attempting to escape Raccoon City. She is pursued by Nemesis, an almost invincible mutant creature sent to kill everyone who has witnessed Umbrella corporation's shady dealings by crashing through a lot of walls and creating more witnesses. Jill is infected by the T-Virus, then cured, which makes the whole endeavor a bit pointless. She kills the Nemesis and escapes the city, which is wiped out by a massive airstrike.
'Resident Evil: Code Veronica'
Three months after the end of Resident Evil 3, Claire leads a raid on an Umbrella corporation base in search of her brother. Since she's a college student with no combat training, she gets captured. Claire wakes up in an Umbrella corporation prison, where a T-Virus outbreak has occurred because holy hell Umbrella is bad at their jobs.
Claire teams up with another escaped inmate named Steve Burnside. The two of them discover that some idiot named Albert Ashford is trying to revive his sister Alexia. Alexia is in cryogenic stasis after creating the T-Veronica virus and using it on herself. The Veronica virus is like the T-Virus, except that it allows its host to keep their intellectual abilities and sanity. It doesn't work very well, which means it's pretty much exactly like the T-Virus.
Steve gets infected with the T-Virus, turns into a mutant, dies and confesses his love to Claire, despite knowing her for like twenty minutes. Also it turns out Wesker is alive, and has super powers now, I guess. Chris is also alive and turns up to rescue Claire because Leon called him. I guess Leon knew where Chris was and decided not to tell Claire and spare her all this bother. Leon is a dick.
Chris blows up Alexia with a cool plasma gun and has a fight with Wesker, who vows revenge despite not having a particular reason to want revenge on Chris. If anything Chris should want revenge on Wesker. Wesker is a dick.
