2016 has been a fantastic year for video games so far and we still have more to come in the next few months. This year has already seen some record-shattering sales of some of the best video games to come out in recent memory. So let's take a look at the best-selling games of 2016 so far. If you aren't one of the millions of people who have bought these games, be sure to add them to your respective holiday shopping lists.

7. Far Cry: Primal

  • Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Number sold: About 3 million copies so far

came out earlier this year and was instantly praised for its breathtaking graphics and realism, but the expansive open world game suffered from a dull story. Despite the lack of a riveting plot, however, the game play and feel made fans go crazy for it. Far Cry: Primal ended up being the best-selling game of February 2016 and the biggest launch of a game in February ever.

If you're looking for an immersive, prehistoric action-adventure game, nothing comes close to Far Cry: Primal.

6. Overwatch

  • Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
  • Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
  • Number sold: About 3 million (hard) copies so far

Putting together this list, I was actually rather surprised didn't make it higher. It seems like anybody who's anybody has spent entire weekends binging the game. Released by Blizzard Entertainment (who celebrated their 25th anniversary this year) back in May, Overwatch quickly became one of the biggest MMOs of the year. It received huge critical acclaim for its unique visuals, creative characters, and engaging game-play.

If you aren't already one of the 20 million people playing, what're you waiting for?

5. Grand Theft Auto V

  • Developer: Rockstar North
  • Publisher: Rockstar Games
  • Number sold: About 4 million copies so far (this year)

is the oldest game on this list; originally it was released in 2013, with the introduction of first-person view in the re-release in 2014. Grand Theft Auto is a huge franchise and their games have always sold well, so it's no surprise to see on this list. It's one of those games that allows good people to indulge in their dark side and commit crimes they would never even consider doing in real life.

(WARNING: GTA V is rated M and the following video reflects that)

If you have a secret (or not so secret) dark side, GTAV is the game for you.

4. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

  • Developer: Naughty Dog
  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Number sold: About 4.3 million copies so far

Personally I think that is the most remarkable addition to this list. Sure it comes in fourth for the most sales so far this year, but that number is astounding if you keep in mind that it is only sold on PS4. That's right, every other game on this list is sold on at least PS4, Xbox One, and PC (and some are sold on older gen systems, as well). So the fact that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End has managed to sell 4.3 million copies worldwide is astounding.

I personally haven't gotten the chance to play through the game, but based on the other games in the franchise (which I have played) Uncharted 4 deserves its spot on this list.

3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

  • Developer: Treyarch
  • Publisher: Activision
  • Number sold: Just under 5 million copies so far

Call Of Duty: Black Ops III brings us into our top three best-selling games of 2016. If you're familiar with the gaming community, you know that there's a huge divide between fans over whether Black Ops III is a good game or not. Personally, I love the innovative new additions Activision made to the Black Ops series. The futuristic setting is unique and new, the game play is smooth and enjoyable (many of the annoying bugs and glitches found in other Call of Duty games were thankfully taken care of), and the abilities are a cool addition.

All of that sets Black Ops III apart from the rest of the Call of Duty franchise and from the rest of first-person shooters in general.

2. Tom Clancy's The Division

  • Developer: Ubisoft Massive
  • Publisher: Ubisoft
  • Number sold: Just under 6 million copies so far

Tom Clancy's The Division has taken the world by storm. It received mostly positive reviews from critics and broke several records. The day it was released broke Ubisoft's record for the company's highest number of sales on the first day and it went on to break the world record for the biggest first week launch of any game ever. The game has done so well this year that a movie version is being developed with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. Since the game is based off the works of author Tom Clancy, I think the movie might break the video game-to-movie mold and actually be worth seeing.

And, clearly, the game itself is well worth playing.

1. FIFA 17

  • Developer: EA Canada
  • Publisher: EA Sports
  • Number sold: Just under 8 million copies so far

The only game in which you can't kill people that makes this list, nabs the top spot with ease. Having sold two million more copies than The Division, FIFA 17 is the most sold game of 2016 so far. This fact is even more impressive considering the game has only been out since late September, meaning it's sold more copies in just a little over than a month than any of the other games have managed all year. That's impressive!

Clearly Activision, Blizzard, and Ubisoft know how to make games that sell. With two games each making the top list, they definitely have enough money to continue to make phenomenal games. Every game on this list deserves to be here and I'm glad to say I've played (and more importantly enjoyed) nearly every game on this list.
