Project Gorgon is an upcoming indie MMOPRG created by a husband-and-wife team that worked on Asheron's Call. The game has been in development for a while, and it has a heavy focus on exploration and very wide set of skills for your character, many of which have nothing to do with combat. Asheron's Call was remarkable for the strong sense of community and friendship it generated among its players, and a spiritual successor would be more than welcomed.

While Project Gorgon isn't graphically lavish, it more than makes up for that in its creativity and the reactivity of its open world, which has already garnered it a devoted fanbase. You can play the alpha version for free right now, and see what the fuss is about.

  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: 2017-2018

Kickstarter-powered Crowfall is still in development and testing stage, but there are rumors that it will finally spread its wings in late 2017. This ambitious project combines MMORPG with strategy elements, with the world being divided into separate 'campaigns', each with its own rules.

Crowfall is also unique in that it seeks to escape the grind trap of many of its peers. There won't be quests to farm 20 bear hides or whatever. Instead, players begin the game with a full loadout of class powers and compete with other players for control of the map.

The emphasis on strategy and conquest is inspired by Game of Thrones, and tasks players with building their empire by capturing resources from their enemies and using them to construct bases and equipment. But the game environment will also be fully destructible, so what your rivals build up you can definitely tear down.

11. 'Cloud Pirates'

  • Developer: Allods Team
  • Publisher: my.com
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: 2017

Not all MMORPGs are about controlling an individual adventurer—on games like EVE Online, players have just as much fun exploring digital worlds in ships. MOBA-inspired Cloud Pirates offers a stylish MMO adventure in the skies. The game pits teams of rocket-powered sailboats against each other in a fierce competition to rule the air.

Combat is accessible, but air battles allow for a greater degree of tactical depth by permitting players to position their ships above or below enemies, or behind obstacles in an attempt to outmaneuver opponents. The long term appeal of Cloud Pirates lies in its many customization options, with new ships, upgrades, skins and accessories available to earn.
