While watching Season 7 of Game of Thrones, I felt a strong desire for an adventure game set in the land of Westeros. A game where I can choose my allegiances between the different factions, where I could rise up the ranks as a mighty warrior, or become the sneakiest spy who could infiltrate any castle. A game like this would definitely contain some resemblance to The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, which is still one of the best examples of an open-world RPG out there.

If the idea of a game that combines the gameplay of Skyrim with the lore and excitement of Game of Thrones gets you as hyped as me, then you could be in luck! Target has today updated a section of their website listing a game titled Bethesda: Game of Thrones. No other information is up yet, but those four words alone are enough to spark the imaginations of any gamer or Game of Thrones fan out there!

Unlimited Possibilites

I seriously cannot wait to slay dragons and get involved with political intrigue in a Bethesda: Game of Thrones crossover, but only time will tell precisely what the nature of this game will be. It could be open world (I hope!) but it could be any other genre.

Perhaps a game where you start as a lowborn or unlanded son in one of the major regions, with the goal of assisting your liege lord in defending or overthrowing the crown. There is a lot of potential for side quests too: recruit brothers for the Knight's Watch, beating back the Hill Tribesmen in The Vale, investigate reports of a Faceless Man sighted in Westeros, or work on crafting your own Valerian steel blade. Game of Thrones translates really well into the world of gaming, I believe.

It is unknown as to whether this would be a game developed by Bethesda, or just published by them, but regardless this is a very exciting development. Game of Thrones would require a game with excellent storytelling, and admittedly that isn't the strongest selling point of Bethesda's other titles. Perhaps they are bringing in outside writers to assist with the creation of Bethesda: Game of Thrones?

Of course, there already is a very popular Game of Thrones mod available for Skyrim, so we might have a pretty good idea of how the game plays from that alone. If it simply expands and improves on this mod, the upcoming game leaked by Target is set to be a fantastic experience!

Huge Sales Potential

If this game lives up to the hype, it could easily achieve - or even surpass - Skyrim sales numbers. It could bring swathes of gamers unfamiliar with the world of Game of Thrones into the fold, or similarly introduce Game of Thrones fans to the wonders of video games!

In June of this year there were reports that Bethesda was busy working on a AAA Free-to-Play game. Could this be the title they have been developing? If so, it's possible Bethesda: Game of Thrones could end up as some kind of free-to-play MMO with a huge budget. This would be an interesting decision and one that begs the question: could Game of Thrones be popular enough to finally oust World of Warcraft as the most popular MMO in the world?

With Season 7 of Game of Thrones wrapping up soon, it seems like a great time to announce a game to keep fans occupied in the world of Westeros until the next season begins. The holiday season is fast approaching too, so a surprise announcement for a Christmas release would ensure the game is a massive hit. Having said that, it's very possible the game will be announced with a release date of 2018.

Regardless of what happens, the lore and story of Game of Thrones is amazing, and I trust Bethesda to do a great job presenting it in video game form, regardless of whether they develop it themselves or act as overseers while publishing the game.

What sort of game would you like Bethesda: Game of Thrones to be?
