There are many superlatives that go with Magic: The Gathering. It's the most famous, the most played, most popular trading card game and so on. The 23-year-old TCG has a long standing generation of fans throughout the world, which makes it ever relevant.
In this list, I've gathered some movie stars that would do fine in the roles of some of the key characters in the game's brilliant lore, starting from the Battle for Zendikar block, released in 2015. The idea is to choose actors who would really fit in those roles, not just by looks, but also availability. It's not like we're casting the next Avengers movie or an all-star Oscar-winning flick. These are actors who have become renowned during this decade, who are working in television and smaller/secondary roles. I'm also aiming for younger actors, so don't expect to see Jake Gyllenhaal as Jace Beleren here, although it'd be the perfect fit imo.
Richard Armitage as Nicol Bolas
Armitage is mostly known for his role as Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit. But he's also played a dragon, metaphorically speaking, in the Hannibal TV series. His powerful voice has been put to test in the Netflix Castlevania animation and it was a success.
Natalie Dormer as Nissa Revane
There was a time when everyone would consider Liv Tyler for the Elvish role of Nissa, due to her experience as Arwen. But time has passed and now Natalie Dormer has arrived. The Game of Thrones star has a unique beauty and physical traces that would perfectly fit the nature artisan Nissa Revane.
Karen Gillan as Chandra Nalaar
Talking about physical appearance, it doesn't get a lot better than this. Gillan is well versed in action fantasy and wearing SFX make-up, since she has been playing Guardians of the Galaxy's Nebula.
Gal Gadot as Liliana Vess
What did I just say about looks? This one seems like the perfect match. Gadot is on everyone's radar right now for her role as Wonder Woman. But her career as a model and her duplicitous role in the Fast and Furious Franchise would guarantee a Liliana that is more than just looks.
Nicholas Hoult as Jace Beleren
Hoult's blue eyes are making a case for themselves, but the rising young actor has the same physical constitution of the character and he's young enough to fit this role. He's particularly known for playing a brilliant intellectual mind in the X-men universe, as Doctor Hank McCoy, aka the Beast.
Jason Momoa as Gideon Jura
I've shown Gideon's illustration to a lot of people. Every time I asked them who could play him in a movie, the only answer everyone gave was Jason Momoa. Previously known as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, he has recently taken over the role of Aquaman in DC Cinematic Universe. His body, hair and even his eyebrows are a perfect match. He'd be quite convincing as the indestructible warrior.
Tina Desai as Saheeli Rai
The plane of Kaladesh seems like a steampunk version of India, and Saheeli Rai is as Indian as it gets. Tina Desai is known for her role as X in Netflix Sense8, who's a woman of science, exquisite beauty, strong personality and who has the kindest of faces.
Lee Pace as Sorin Markov
Sorin is almost like a classic vampire, except he's also a Planeswalker, and one of the most powerful and oldest in existence. Lee Pace is used to transforming himself in whatever role he is assigned to, such Thranduil in The Hobbit or Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy. His highly expressive face and powerful performance are everything we need to see Sorin live action.
Emily Browning as Nahiri
Nahiri, aka the Lithomancer, is a mysterious character whose never belie the immensity of her powers. Although she looks like a small woman with white hair and skin, she is a fierce warrior, the most powerful stoneforge mystic and another of the most powerful planeswalkers alive. Emily Browning is used to playing mysterious roles, as seen in American Gods and Sleeping Beauty, but she also kicked a lot of ass as the lead character in Sucker Punch. Oh, and don't be fooled, she's almost 30.
