We're all familiar with the now common and dreaded result of popular video game adaptations. It's usually pretty awful to be blunt. However, we still have hope that one day bad video game adaptations will be a thing of the past and we can enter a golden era for these kinds of movies/shows. That hope was elevated with films like WarCraft and continues with Netflix's Castlevania. This anime series caught me by surprise and I believe everybody with a Netflix account needs to watch it -- here's why!
1. Trevor Belmont Is A Badass!
With a villain as epic as Dracula, you need a great hero to counter him, and that definitely comes through with Trevor Belmont who fans might remember from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Trevor Belmont is voiced by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield from the Hobbit Trilogy) and he just owns the role with his cheesy-yet-awesome one liners and some genuinely funny jokes. He brings an edge to a character that had no personality before and I really enjoyed him.
2. Beautiful Animation
Clearly Netflix wasted no money when it came to the animation because every single frame is beautifully drawn, from the breathtaking landscapes to the horrifying gothic imagery. Everything looks amazing and the character designs are especially pleasing on the eye.
3. Fan Service!
#Castlevania is based off an iconic video game franchise so it makes sense that Easter Eggs and references would be tossed into the batter of this delicious cake. These aren't simply out of place references and nods to the fans, but rather they're used to enhance the plot and will appeal to general audiences as much as those well versed in the games. Fans will also see many resemblances to titles like Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
4. Dark Humor
This is a mature TV show that you should not let your kids watch. Profanity, blood, gore, dark imagery, and Gothic content make it one of the most adult shows I've seen from Netflix. Along with that, there is a surprisingly large amount of dark comedy, mostly coming from Trevor Belmont who is essentially a complete asshole, but a likeable one. Several of these jokes actually managed to make me laugh out loud which I was totally not expecting from a series like Castlevania.
5. Mature And Proud!
Like I mentioned, this series is dark. You've got an evil bishop corrupting the church, vampires and demons, men, women, and children being brutally murdered on screen and Trevor Belmont being one foul-mouthed character. And that's just the half of it.
6. Tons of Potential For Seasons
With the series now greenlit for a second season, there is so much potential within the plethora of games in the franchise, such as Super Castlevania IV, Lords of Shadow, and so on.
Castlevania for Netflix is probably one of the best anime in recent years and I cannot recommend it enough. It's dark, it's epic, it's fun, and even a tad bit scary at times.
