Alright, Resi fans, we've been to the moon and back with this one but it seems that all of our speculation must come to an end. The powers that be (Capcom) have cleared up one of Resident Evil 7's most scandalous fan theories once and for all—that guy at the end of the game is definitely Chris Redfield.
Capcom Confirms That The Endgame Cameo In 'Resident Evil 7' Is Chris Redfield
In a recent blog post on #Capcom's Japanese site, director Koushi Nakanishi has de-fogged the theory-stained glass in a discussion about their approach to character creation in general.
Here is a rough translation from Eurogamer:
This time, each character is made on the premise of photo realistic depiction, and Chris Redfield which appears in "Not A Hero" (DLC scheduled for free delivery this spring) also receives a pretty impressive impression.
It turns out that Chris Redfield's Donkey Kong-esque model from Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 just wasn't cutting it for #ResidentEvil7 so Capcom opted for a new model instead.
Although [RE6 Chris' model] is [a] fairly realistic impression, even if it mixes with the character of "7", it seems that a sense of incongruity will come out.
What a shame. It would seem that it's all been settled in the most reasonable but unsatisfying way possible!
Then Again, Questions Remain...
Call me stubborn but I'm admittedly not super sold on this turn of events. If photorealism was this important to them from the beginning, you would think that the version of Chris that we see in Resident Evil: Vendetta would have also looked more like Resident Evil 7's Redfield. Right?
I don't know about you, but I've still got my fingers crossed for a bit of a bait-and-switch. There could still be some mystery of a different kind left in our future. After all, Chris is still flying an Umbrella helicopter in his new Umbrella Corps gear. It could also just be that I'm a simple superfan reeling from the blow of this new revelation. Who knows?!
Nevertheless, we will really have our questions answered once the free Not A Hero DLC is released sometime this spring.
