This July, Pokémon trainers can look forward to Pokémon the Movie 20: I Choose You!, remarkably the 20th film from the beloved pocket monster franchise. Judging by the trailer below, it appears the flick will be the retelling of Ash Ketchum and Pikachu’s journey through the Indigo Plateau.

Most of the scenes in the trailer reference the anime’s first episode, with being disobedient, Ash protecting him from the Spearow, and the bonding between the two heroes that ensues. A second scene in the trailer features Ho-Oh flying past Pikachu and Ash, which is another reference in the anime.

The Legendary Pokémon is a lot closer to the pair, leaving our trainer a rainbow wing. According to Bulbapedia, a rainbow feather allows a trainer to encounter Ho-Oh up the Bell Tower. Bulbapedia also describes the movie as a retelling of Ash's journey through Kanto, which means we'll probably see flashbacks of his major gym battles, Pokémon captures, and story arcs. While we're unlikely to see Brock and Misty traveling alongside him, we might get to see them in flashback battles.

I have my doubts about Ash and Pikachu catching Ho-Oh in the movie, but they're likely to interact with him if Ash wins his first badge, and following his journey into the Pokémon Tower.

In the previous movies, Ash and his friends connect with Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, with the gang having to come to the aid of Pokémon and save them from the films' primary antagonists. Ash and his are sure to help Ho-Oh in I Choose You's climatic scene — and it wouldn't surprise me if Team Rocket's Giovanni was the Big Bad.

Pokémon the Movie 20: I Choose You! will be released on July 15 in Japan. What do you think will happen to Ash and Pikachu? Sound off in the comments below.
