The latest Kingdom Hearts 2.8 trailer just launched at the Tokyo Game Show and is already online for those of us not in attendance. But what's going on? What have we learned from this new trailer? First and foremost, we now know that the release date was delayed another month to January 24th (12th for Japan), seemingly for a PS4 Pro release.

2.8 will have several storylines, so we'll breakdown the two dominant ones into sections right after we take another peek at the trailer below.

Kingdom Hearts: A Fragmented Passage Breakdown

VEN WHAT ARE YOU WEARING
VEN WHAT ARE YOU WEARING

First off is the Fragmented Passage storyline.

So, Ven looks like he's wearing the same outfit as Vanitas. That's cool, but no actual Vanitas. Could Vanitas have joined hearts with Ventus, or is this all the darkness playing tricks on Aqua? It's certainly possible, since Terranort it also present, and he's supposed to be in Radiant Garden at this point.

How many times is Ven gonna fall asleep?
How many times is Ven gonna fall asleep?

What's with the Snow White sleeping vibe? It looks like we're also gonna see Dwarf Woodlands in this installment, now. This is pretty cool, considering we will also be seeing Castle of Dreams in Kingdom Hearts 0.2.

We've also now seen both Terra and Ventus in the realm of darkness, (#UnexpectedReunion anybody?) so call me crazy but I think this is gonna end up being a lot more than just your average hold-over kind of game.

Aqua vs Aqua, the ultimate battle
Aqua vs Aqua, the ultimate battle

This next screenshot sort of reminds me of the magic mirror battle in BBS, but I could be wrong here. This hints that we'll be gearing up for an Aqua vs Aqua battle and that just seems absolutely awesome. Additionally, if this doesn't basically confirm there's at least some kind of illusion or mind games going on Aqua, I don't know what does.

WAIT WHAT
WAIT WHAT

Let me think: we've now got Terra, Riku, Sora – can we count Axel? I'll count Axel – and now Aqua. Now, basically all of the confirmed Guardians of Light have dabbled in darkness, so can we even call them Guardians of Light anymore? Anyways, this whole darkness stint for Aqua doesn't seem to last too long because...

Oh look, it's Mickey! Always coming in clutch.
Oh look, it's Mickey! Always coming in clutch.

...Mickey Mouse is back!

This beautiful mouse comes in for the clutch moment, as always, seemingly right away. This point of the trailer is my personal favorite, because it brings everything back to the main storyline from BBS. Mickey's outfit at this point is identical to that of his getup in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, so we can assume this is around the time when Mickey and Riku returned to the realm of darkness.

Granted this raises the question "Why didn't Aqua leave the realm of darkness with Mickey and Riku?" I guess that might just be something we'll have to play the game to find out!

To sum up:

  • Ven looks like he's wearing the same outfit as Vanitas
  • We're going to see Dwarf Woodlands in this installment
  • We're likely going to have an Aqua vs Aqua battle
  • All the known Gaurdians of Light have been touched by darkness in some way
  • Mickey Mouse will finally return

Kingdom Hearts: Back Cover Breakdown

Can the world be saved by just 7 people? Well that's basically the plot to KH3 so I think so...

Okay, so I've already told myself Back Cover is the first thing I'm doing when I get my hands on a copy of Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and any new footage is more than welcome to me.

Dang Aced didn't anyone tell you no alliances? No wonder your unions always last in weekly rankings...
Dang Aced didn't anyone tell you no alliances? No wonder your unions always last in weekly rankings...

In the trailer we've got Aced, the Ursus leader, talking to Ava, the leader of the Vulpes union, and Gula, the Leopardos leader, about forming an alliance for the Keyblade War.

As we already know, Ava's band of misfit toys - I mean the Dandelions - fled from the Keyblade War and didn't fight, even though the rest of her union did. Will we actually see an alliance here?

Same Gula, I also can't trust people. Oops. :)
Same Gula, I also can't trust people. Oops. :)

Now we see Gula again, standing in an alley talking about how he can't trust anyone. I never really thought he would be the traitor, and this foreshadowing more or less proves that some kind of treason is on the horizon.

Something about Foretellers and wanting to be alone, well except for Aced and Ava.

Now we see Invi, the Anguis foreteller, by the clocktower pretty much putting together what we as players knew all along - that this was all leading to the Keyblade War.

Oooooh, two black coats. Fancy.
Oooooh, two black coats. Fancy.

Alright so here we see the Master of Masters, and Luxu. Just to clear things up, Luxu is the one with the keyblade, and the Master of Masters is sitting down. Now that that's settled, it looks like the Master of Masters is telling Luxu "Unfortunately, you'll have to go alone from here on out." This seems to me like the Master of Masters is either telling Luxu to start chain reaction of events leading to the Keyblade War, or try and stop it. Considering he prevents Ava from stopping it at the end of the story in KHX I think it's safe to assume the former.

To sum up:

  • Aced, Gula, and Ava may form some kind of alliance
  • Someone is going to get betrayed (well, likely)
  • Invi is finally having revelations about the Keyblade War
  • The Master of Masters is leaving to do... something
  • Luxu will likely be kicking off a series of events to start the Keyblade War

Overall, we learned a ton more from this trailer than the last KH 2.8 trailer reveal, which is always welcome as we patiently wait until that new January release date. Oh, and we're still waiting on Kingdom Hearts 3, but we'll try not to hold our breath.
