There's been an overabundance of Pokémon-themed this, Pokémon-themed that as of late. From artwork that turns Pokémon into humans, to costumes that turn humans into Pokémon, to Pokémon hanging out with all your favorite Disney characters, people have gotten, well, Poké-crazed. Me? I'm still just waiting for Pokémon-themed wine to hit the shelves.
The one thing about all this #Pokémon mash-up art, however, is that it's usually restricted to just that—art. Non-moving, non-interactive, beautiful, but static art. What if, however, someone were to take things a step further and turn those mash-ups into actual games? Well, one over-achieving (and extraordinarily talented) fan has taken things into his own hands to make Pokémon game mash-ups that look and feel like they could be coming from your very own Game Boy!

All Your Favorite Games Have Been Poké-fied!
YouTube user Hat-Loving Gamer has expertly recreated a number of different games using sprites, music, and themes from the original Pokémon Game Boy games, and the results are, well, pretty fantastic. Not only do we get to see games that should never share gameplay with Pokémon forced into a strange amalgamation of RPG elements, action elements, and puzzle elements, you get to do so against the backdrop of some pretty quirky stories, too.
A few of Hat-Loving Gamer's videos are compilations of various games pieced together with Ash & Pikachu-themed glue. From Ash's big (albeit unsuccessful) date with Misty, to Pikachu hitting the arcade with Slowpoke, you get amusing little snippets of tongue-in-cheek humor in between each of the classic game mash-ups, which is much more creative and entertaining than just tossing a whole bunch of edited clips together.
Of course, the actual game mash-ups themselves still steal the spotlight. Hat-Loving Gamer somehow manages to capture the essence of the original game despite using the severely limited Pokémon sprite library and control scheme.
With three compilation vids already, he's transformed the following games into (what probably wouldn't be that fun to play in reality but are still hilarious) Pokémon games:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Super Smash Bros.
- Super Mario Bros.
- Street Fighter
- Jumpman vs Donkey Kong
- Streets of Rage
- Tomb Raider
- Angry Birds
- Super Mario Kart
My favorites of the bunch are definitely #Tetris, #MarioKart, and #AngryBirds, just because those games should never, ever be RPGs, and the way Hat-Loving Gamer interprets them using Pokémon game mechanics is not only good for a jolly guffaw but brilliantly clever, to boot.
But the compilation videos aren't the only vids with Poké-fied games Hat-Loving Gamer's come up with. He's also made three separate, longer vids with more in-depth looks at some of the more popular games in Pokémon form.
The Sims 5: Gotta Catch 'Em All Edition
In his Pokémon meets #TheSims video, Ash and Pikachu get their very own new home in Pallet Town with furniture consisting of a Lapras on the kitchen table and a TV with SNES on the second floor. Watch as Ash attempts to woo (and woohoo!) Misty, as Pikachu and Charmander set the house on fire (with decidedly ashy consequences), and Pikachu tries to combat his depression with raves, bling, and unprotected sex.
Call of Duty: PokeOps
Or if you're in the mood for something a little more violent, how about some #CallofDuty? Or shall we say... Oak of Duty? The hilarity unfolds as Red and Blue are given their very first starter guns before being blown away by user MuTu0206. Professor Oak goes off in search of revenge, but his lack of skills require him to find a partner in the form of grizzled veteran PiKay_25.
Grand Theft Poke: Goldenrod City
In this epic mash-up of every #GrandTheftAuto game and Pokémon, you'll get to watch the various GTA protagonists jack cars, hit random passers-by with baseball bats, hire hookers, conduct drives-by, and face off against the entire army in an epic battle of questionable proportions. How will our anti-heroes ever be able to win against all those tanks?! Well, you'll just have to see...
If you're a fan of the vids, head over to his voting video where you can vote for the next game to get a Pokémon makeover.
