When the great outdoors meets retro gaming. Outside of playing the classics on the Nintendo Switch, I can't say I'd ever had that thought until now. Thanks to the amazing images from Spanish photographer Victor Somoza Benitez the 16-bit legends of the gaming past seemingly jump out of the '80s with these real-life scenarios.

After managing to step away from his SNES console, Victor has taken his love of old-school gaming and let his imagination run over into the everyday world. The images presented look so plausible, from Mario leaping through the air to Sonic nearing maximum velocity on a roller coaster. I've tried to pick the best of the crop here (with a pommy accent) for your viewing pleasure.

As you can see, night or day, each photograph characterises what you would expect from the game. Doom going boom with a red hot minigun carving up demons is right on the money.

For now all of his images are sourced from 16-bit games only. Over time it would be great to see the project expanded from the to the , showcasing another generation of iconic characters.

It's a crazy time we live in with opportunity for expression at our finger tips through the innovation technology has provided us. While most use their camera's filters to smooth out their flaws on Snapchat, artists such as Victor Somoza Benitez use their time more productively. When you do make your token appearance in the great outdoors, try and look beyond the mundane and add some '80s colour to your world too.
