It's been 30 years since the original Final Fantasy released in Japan on December 18, 1987. If that wasn't enough to celebrate, it will also mark the 20th anniversary of . So, as you'd expect, we anticipate Square Enix have something big planned in the form of a celebration.

Executive producer Shinji Hashimoto said in a recent interview with Famitsu that will announce their plans for 2017 'soon', but that gives us just enough time to run through what we expect and want to see when Square commemorate 30 years of .

There are a few things we can guarantee in 2017—short of a delay announcement—such as Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age's launch on . The title is a remastered version of the last Final Fantasy game to be released on the 2 back in 2006, but it's more than just a visual upgrade.

The combat system has been modernized and the job system has been given a revamp—the AI controlling gambit system was relatively divisive at the time, so it will be interesting to see how people react to these changes. Throw in some trophy support and some improved sounds and this should theoretically be the best version of Final Fantasy XII.

Additionally, with Final Fantasy VII having launched on the PS1 back in 1997—which for many was their first introduction to the JRPG genre—we can be sure to hear from it. This game has been captivating gaming audiences for almost two decades now so there's definitely some Final Fantasy VII Remake action planned, but it might not be what you expect.

Square Enix announced two new figures for their Play Arts Kai line, featuring Cloud Strife and Barret Wallace, which are planned for release in April and May respectively. Whilst this is the only thing that's confirmed to arrive related to the Final Fantasy VII Remake next year, we're expecting a lot more in 2017.

What We Want To See For The Anniversary Celebration

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake

Have I made that clear? Maybe I should expand...

Hopefully towards the latter half of 2017 we'll see the first part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake—seeing as it's been split into episodes—which will be set in the city of Midgar. By splitting the game into numerous parts, it allows the team to focus on more world building and exploration, similar to what happened with HITMAN. Square Enix have hinted that Part One of the Final Fantasy VII Remake will be bigger than the entirety of the original! Here's hoping we see it next year...

Please Be True: 30th Anniversary Collection

There's a rumor that a Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Collection will come to PlayStation 4. Unlike the Japan exclusive 25th Anniversary Ultimate Box, this new collection is rumored for an American release and includes Final Fantasy I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII and IX on PS4 and PS Vita on a single disc/card.

If you haven't already grabbed your wallet and started transferring money into an alternate dimension, can I tempt you with three versions to sink your bank balance into?

  • Regular version - Games, plus a poster.
  • Collector's Edition - Games, poster, art book, 8-bit Black Mage keychain, Chocobo plush and two discs with a selection of songs chosen by Nobuo Uematsu.

Lastly is the Crystal Complete Edition, which is supposed to be a super-limited edition available from the Square Enix website, which will feature every Final Fantasy:

  • Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Collection titles (FF I to IX)
  • Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD
  • Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
  • Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy, Final Fantasy XV (and all DLC)
  • Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (including all expansions, plus a 3 month subscription)
  • Special items for Final Fantasy XI Mobile and Final Fantasy XIV will be included as well.

I hope you've got some spare inventory space, since it's also said to feature a ton of physical goods:

  • All the physical goods included in the Collector’s Edition
  • Two extra discs for the soundtrack
  • A crystal necklace
  • Moogle plush
  • Black Mage statue
  • Three Final Fantasy Trading Card Game starter decks
  • Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
  • Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV
  • Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV

It's an enormous compilation of games and a mix of physical and digital goods, housed in a 'luxury' chest decorated with a Final Fantasy Logo. This is probably the things that makes it the most unbelievable, because which logo would you choose?

I'm a little skeptical about the source, so take this with a fair amount of salt. Since after looking into it, I'm not sure what to expect anymore.

To be honest, I just want more Final Fantasy cupcakes.

Happy anniversary, Final Fantasy!

Do you think there will be a 30th anniversary collection? Will the Final Fantasy VII remake be out in 2017?
