Gears of War 3 is undoubtedly the best game in the series (so far). Coming out of the highly acclaimed studio, Epic Games, Gears of War 3 quickly established itself as the firm fan favourite. The game pulls the series together beautifully; it was an unmitigated success, the perfect way for the team to round off Marcus Phoenix’s incredible journey.

Each and every Gears game has serious replayability, which is why I was so surprised to see that there was an Easter Egg out there that had gone unnoticed for 5 years. I mean, I must have played through the series at least half a dozen times, how could I not have found this nugget of grub smashing brilliance?

I’ll tell you why, because it is insanely hard to find. I have no idea how these guys found it. Seriously, how would anyone find this!?

The 5 Years Old Easter Egg

Discovered by committed Easter Egg hunters Tac-Com, the secret itself is reminiscent of the old Nintendo classic Duck Hunt. It is a mini-game that allows the player to obtain some pretty big guns. The Easter Egg in question can be found in chapter 2 of act 2, House of Sand.

To activate the Easter Egg the player has to locate and destroy three tiny coins. This is not as easy as it sounds as two of the coins are located well outside the boundaries of the map, attached to the background scenery. These must therefore be located and destroyed with a sniper rifle. The third can be found at the end of the pathway.

When you destroy a coin a faint horn can be heard. Fight your way through a few waves of enemies and find the remaining coins. Once all coins have been located and destroyed a low lying fog will descend onto the path ahead of you. Head on into the mist and you will enter into the mini-game.

The idea is that you man the big turret in the middle and obliterate the Grubs as they shoot out of the ground. You are rewarded with various weapons depending on how many enemies you hit.

Zero hits earns you Smokes, one hit earns you a Snub pistol, two hits earns you a Boltok, three hits earns you a Gorgon, four hits earns you a Boomshot and five hits earns you a Mulcher.

As you can see this quite the secretive little number. This gets me to thinking how many more Easter Eggs are still waiting to be found in the Gears series.

We have more video game Easter Eggs that will blow your mind. My favourite is definitely the 29-Year-Old Easter Egg discovered in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
