We're about a month and a half out from the release of Resident Evil 7 and the surprises just keep coming. Over the weekend, the game's demo The Beginning Hour received what may be the final update ahead of the release: Resident Evil 7: Midnight.

The update introduces some new areas and some new items but it also provides an answer to one of the most pressing questions since the demo's initial release: "What are we supposed to do with the dummy finger?!"

How To Use The Dummy Finger In Resident Evil 7 & Unlock Bonus Content

If you're a proper Resident Evil fan, the dummy finger freaked you out—not because it's a weird grimy finger, but because the metallic portion on the bottom appeared to be a key, and there was nowhere to use it! Fortunately, the team at Capcom heard our cries and it appears our curiosity is being satiated through the Resident Evil: Midnight demo.

Here is how you can (finally) make use of that mannequin finger to solve the five murder mysteries.

Find The Resident Evil 7 Notebook

If you've played the demo in its updated form until now, you should have the following items and you will need them in order to proceed:

  • Dummy finger
  • Dummy hand
  • The valve

Found in the Resident Evil: Twilight update, the dummy hand can be combined with the finger. You will need these three things to successfully survive an encounter with the Molded. Once you've done that, you'll find a drawer near the bloody bathroom and, inside of that drawer, there will be an item called the Notebook.

Head into the bathroom to use the valve near the toilet and acquire a handgun (...from the toilet). Now you're ready for the basement! While down there, you're going to want to use the handgun to stun some more Molded so that you can grab the Attic Window Key.

Mysteries 1 & 2

The next step is to point your weird gross dummy hand at a few things:

  • The pile of rubble (first floor beneath the clock)
  • The body bag hanging in the gurney (basement)

Keep your ears open for...some weird confirmation sounds. Once the pointing is done, you'll head back upstairs to the picture of the woman with the sack over her head. As if she hasn't gone through enough, you'll have to hit her in the face with the axe.

Mysteries 3 & 4

For this part, you'll have to do some more pointing. Here are the next two spots for that:

  • Top right-hand corner of the attic with all of the wires
  • Boarded up door (small voodoo doll room under the stairs)

Stay tuned for more creepy noises confirming your pointing and get ready for the next round of strange activities.

The Final Mystery

The last steps that will help you get to the last pointing spot require a lot of pretty specific actions that should be done in a specific order.

First, head into the kitchen and open the pot full of bugs. After that, watch the VHS segment again and, while you're inside of it, open the fridge, the microwave, and the pot. After Andre disappears, open the draw where the dummy finger is supposed to be, head into the attic, and then look at the headphones on the table.

The trickier part...

While you're still in the VHS segment, you have to try to encounter the ghost woman. This means looking in all of the places she could possibly spawn. After that you should finish the VHS segment in its entirety without quitting.

Once the tape finishes running, head back into the basement to the back room, crouch down and look at the doll until your back is facing her. Sounds weird, I know, so peep the helpful gif above this blurb.

The final pointing moment, occurs after this. You'll go into the kitchen and point at the rotten food inside of the now opened pot.

Head up to the attic and the previously locked door should have five bloody handprints on it now. It's also going to be unlocked—your prize awaits inside!
