Injustice 2 is the sequel to 2013's critically acclaimed fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us. The game features characters and storylines from the #DC Comics Injustice series, but takes place in its own universe. Released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in May 2017, the game has since received high praise from fans.
In addition to the action-packed story mode, the appeal of the game comes from its spectacular character development. From the voice acting, to the facial expressions, the DC characters that fans know and love are lovingly translated into the game, with particular attention paid to unique, quirky dialogue.
Before each fight, the characters engage in a bit of trash talk by exchanging clever dialogue back and forth. Lines are not generic as each character says something specific to his or her opponent which relates to their relationship and/or history. For example, Green Arrow and Black Canary, who are married in the Injustice universe, exchange humorous trash talk about being husband and wife, such as “Is this what you’d call a lover’s quarrel?” and “Loser has to do the dishes.” Dialogue is also exchanged in the middle of fights during a “clash” and when each character’s health bar reaches a certain level. This is where you may be lucky enough to hear an Arrowverse Easter Egg!
In case you don’t yet realize the irony, the #Arrowverse is a shared universe that is centered on the DC live-action television shows which air on The CW, including Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. Although these shows are based on the DC Comics characters, they also exercise creative freedom and explore plots separate from the comics and all other DC universes.
So what's the Arrowverse Easter Egg in Injustice 2? When the Flash and Green Arrow are fighting and Green Arrow’s health has depleted to its midpoint, one of the Flash’s possible lines of dialogue is:
This line refers to Oliver Queen's (Green Arrow) on-again, off-again relationship with Felicity Smoak in the Arrow television series, also known as #Olicity. In the Arrowverse, Felicity confides in Barry Allen (the Flash) at rough times in her relationship with Oliver, creating the basis for the Flash’s line about Green Arrow breaking her heart. Clearly this line does not belong in the game since Olicity does not exist in the Injustice universe, but it was slipped in as a fun nod to Arrowverse fans.
It seems that the Injustice 2 game developers had some fun writing the many possible lines that can be heard in the game. Fans have already created YouTube compilation videos thatErank the best and funniest character exchanges.
