Let's get a big disclaimer out of the way. The screenshot in question is an unconfirmed leak from an anonymous Redditor and has not yet been verified by Ubisoft, who has been tight lipped about the next Assassin's Creed game.
With that gain of salt firmly in hand, if this is an actual leak from the rumored Assassin's Creed: Origins, then it also confirms several other rumors all at once. Let's take a look.
The Details Confirm Egypt As A Setting
So there you have it! It sure looks as though this could be a capture from a test run of the rumored Egyptian-era Assassin's Creed: Origins. The upcoming game from Ubisoft Montreal is expected to be officially announced at or just before E3 2017.
There are a few large tip-offs here that confirm the coastal Egyptian setting.
- The assassination target in the top right is "the Crocodile." While likely a nickname, crocodiles are native to parts of Egypt.
- While obscured, the text also references "Khemut's Villa" (or Khamut, it's unclear), a name that strongly evokes naming conventions of Egypt and other parts of northern Africa.
- The boat shows similarities to some small Mediterranean vessels.

Considering how #Ubisoft has spent two years developing this game, it's interesting that only a couple months before #E3 we've seen the first leaked image so they're being extra secretive which is a good thing since the game could be the make it or break it entry for the franchise.
While looking at the image there are a few things that stand out to the avid Assassin's Creed player.
Naval Combat Is Coming Back
It sure looks as though there will be a fair amount of naval combat and/or exploration, a likely mechanical holdover from the well-received Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Now, that's not to say that we'll see pirate ships and have the same feel as the action in Black Flag, but we will likely have some sort of action on the seas in the new game.
The current rumor is that along with the rivers and byways, the game map will be so large that the Mediterranean Sea is included as players can travel from Egypt to Greece. The inclusion of naval play can only make the world of the Assassins feel that much larger as we'll likely run into Persians and Macedonians if the gameplay era is correct.
Open World Assassination Targets
If you look in the upper left corner, you'll see the standard list of current objectives. Assassinate the Crocodile. As mentioned, this is another indicator the Egyptian setting, and it also potentially shows off a system of open world targets and objectives.
It's a fair assumption that even though the game is rumored to be less linear and more open world, this may be a method of displaying select objectives, similar to Horizon Zero Dawn's recent objective system. With two tasks listed it could easily be seen as a main objective and an optional or secondary objective based on your location or progress through the game.
It's A Quick Glimpse, And We're Thirsty For More
This image does go a long way to making it more plausible that we are in store for an Egyptian era game filled with new opportunities to explore. But there are still a ton of unanswered questions on the table. Plus, we still don't even know if the image is real, a fake, or a high quality red herring from Ubisoft to throw us off the scent of the real Assassin's Creed: Origins.
What do you think? Is this image legit, or just a really high quality fake?
