Say it with me now, folks: "FINALLY!" Yes, finally zealots and fans of all things action games may finally get a chance to play as their favorite Avengers outside of the world of Lego.

Marvel Entertainment has teamed up with Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy XV publisher Square Enix, announcing a multi-year, multi-game partnership that begins with... something called The Avengers Project!

Here's the The Avengers Project teaser trailer for your expectant eyes:

And here's what Square Enix had to say following the announcement:

The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.

This is a pretty big deal. A very big deal in fact, seeing as we haven't had a good non-Lego branded Marvel game since X-Men Origins: Wolverine which surpassed the movie it was based on by a plethora of light years, man. And knowing this, Square Enix has dragged in their two most successful development teams to work together—I guess—on the games: Crystal Dynamics (Rise of the Tomb Raider) and Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex: Human Revolution). Though apart from that, details are still pretty scarce at the moment.

What A Tease...

From the looks of that trailer it seems everything's gone up s*** creek for the Avengers, doesn't it? But seeing as it's an original story, I wonder how far it will verge from the continuity of the MCU?

The voice in the trailer reckons "the time of heroes is over". And "that if you're different, you're dangerous." What great cataclysm could have occurred for Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Captain America to be locked away or simply stripped of their weapons?

And whose voice is that narrating the trailer? She vaguely sounds like Scarlett Johannson, so could Black Widow be playing a major part in The Avengers Project? If so, that'd be so dope!

Seeing as both Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have a fairly solid track rate when it comes to third- and first-person games, I think it's fair to say we'll be getting an action-packed, open world action/adventure for The Avengers Project, one where you'll have to rescue to Avengers in order to unlock them for play.

There'll more than likely be a slew of mobile games too, judging by the success of Lara Croft GO and Deus Ex GO, and infinite runners in the style of Lara Croft: Relic Run. And we should see these all release on the usual suspects, like PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Project Scorpio, PC, 3DS, iOS & Android, PC and Nintendo Switch. But without concrete info, I'm just flapping into the wind.

Good though to see Marvel is making an effort to "SMASH" its way back onto console. How do you feel about it?

Looking forward to Square Enix's Marvel games?
