Brace yourselves, the latest installment of BioWare's beloved alien seduction sim #MassEffect has dropped a gorgeous-looking trailer, and the interstellar hype train is exiting hyperspace.

What the trailer doesn't tell you

The cinematic trailer for #MassEffectAndromeda is heavy on scenery and drama, but light on story detail, especially for a particular burning question on the lips of Mass Effect fans—how will BioWare tackle the aftermath of the ending(s) to Mass Effect 3's story?

Mass Effect Andromeda's new Andromeda Initiative website spells out quite a few details that the trailer skips over. For one thing, it pinpoints exactly when in the Mass Effect timeline the events of the new game take place—the story avoids being constrained to one possible Mass Effect 3 ending.

Space and Time

Start at the beginning
Start at the beginning

New player character Ryder leaves the Milky Way galaxy on their 600-year journey to Andromeda in the year 2185.

Longtime fans of the franchise may notice that that's the year that sees the conclusion of the Mass Effect 2 story, and the same year in which the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC takes place.

The following year, 2186, is the setting of Mass Effect 2's Arrival DLC. The Reapers begin their invasion of the Milky Way, sparking the events of Mass Effect 3.

While all this is going on, Ryder's ark ship is already on its way to Andromeda (along with four others), with the crew in cryogenic suspension. Hence, the characters in Mass Effect: Andromeda will not have witnessed the Reaper war or its conclusion.

If they could somehow gain information about the Reaper war in-game, it'll be 600-year old news and the details of the resolution will likely be conveniently vague.

According to the information on the site, this timeline centers the main in-game action of Andromeda around the year 2785.

Orientation day

BioWare's Andromeda Initiative website doesn't just have information. There's also a series of training videos (right now only the first is viewable). Watching all 6 of them will unlock an exclusive Pathfinder helmet in Andromeda upon launch.

The Andromeda Initiative website's timeline also details the events of Mass Effect 1 and associated companion media such as the various prequel novels and comics. Fans browsing the site can pinpoint the events of the First Contact War and humanity gaining its seat on the Citadel Council.

Nice to know you, Space Dad

There's also information on the protagonist's in-game father, Alec Ryder, and his biography. Emotional players might take care to avoid getting too attached, though:
