Hold onto your blocks, homies, because the Warner Bros.-produced Minecraft movie finally has a release date, and it's all very exciting if you're the patient type.
Set to release on May 24th, 2019, the game that spawned 1,000 cross-ports, soft toys, a Telltale Games quintessentially story-driven series, its own convention, and so much more, will be heading into IMAX and other good 3D screens for its first — and surely not last — cinematic adventure.
The news came straight from the fingers of Minecraft developer Mojang itself, as it posted the news over on its blog. Naturally, the message (delivered by Mojang COO Vu Bui) was upbeat and went some way to appease the long wait:
"Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome 'Minecraft' movie, right?"
Well, that would be nice. Yeah!
With the movie being three years away, information around it is fleeting at best. But what we do know is the flick will be directed by It's Always Sunny In California alum Rob McElhenney and produced by The LEGO Movie's Roy Lee.
Fan-casting 'Minecraft: The Movie'
But with all of that in mind, naturally even more questions begin to arise. For instance, will the movie's narrative follow MInecraft: Story Mode, or will the creators go with a whole new adventure? Maybe...a live-action adventure?
Imagine with me, for a few moments, a live-action Minecraft movie. That would be insane! But which performers would have the necessary skill to slip into the mindset of an anthropomorphized pile of blocks? I have a few ideas, so bear with me:
I have all the time in the world for Mr. Reeves — reasons including Bill & Ted, Point Break, The Matrix, and John Wick. Oh, and the fact that he seems like a real stand-up guy. But he is known for popping out the odd wooden performance on camera, and that wouldn't go amiss for playing a blocky lead.
Swapping one pile of cubes for one big ol' walking cube of meat. (Please don't hurt me for saying that!)
And what about a supporting cast?
as Reuben the pig
It would only make sense for McElhenney to bring some of his It's Always Sunny squadmates to the realms of Minecraft, and who better than the legendary DeVito on vocal duty for a talking pig?
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
as Every damn piece of rock dug up in the movie
It's the logical choice.
as The Creator
The man who laid down the first brick would be perfect as the one who governs the world of Minecraft itself. Yeah, I think that would be fairly fitting, don't you?
Anyway, jokes aside, how do you think Minecraft: The Movie will pan out?
Are you even looking forward to it?
