Power Rangers is currently all the rage at the moment, with the new movie opening this weekend, Twitch airing every episode of the series, seeing the original Rangers reuniting at the premiere, news that the movie is actually good (for a Power Rangers film), and now a new game that let's you play as rangers from whatever your favorite season of the show is, it's a great week to be a Power Rangers fan.
Power Rangers: Legacy Wars is a new game available for both Android and iOS devices that will have you assembling a team of three Rangers (or villains) and fight your way through real time PvP battles.
You can check out the trailer below:
Legacy Wars was developed in a partnership with #Saban, Lionsgate, and mobile game developer, nWay.
The game's description is as follows.
"Rita Repulsa, the space witch, has infected the Morphin Grid, creating virtual monsters and Ranger clones programmed to fight on her behalf. Fight back with your own curated team of legendary Power Rangers and villains from the multiverse! Unlock new Rangers, upgrade your best warriors and create the best team to defeat Rita, and save the Morphin Grid."
Round One! Fight!
Legacy Wars is swipe and slide fighting game. You swipe towards an opponent to move closer and away from an enemy to dodge. However it's how you attack an enemy that makes Legacy Wars distinct among the mobile space.
The player has 10 power points to start with cards to the right of the screen. Each card represents an attack the player can choose providing they have enough power. As you spend points to attack, those points will constantly regenerate. So in the heat of the 100 second battle, you'll be forced to quickly choose which attack to use.
Blocking also plays a role. It costs nothing to block but when doing so your points will not regenerate and you won't be able to move for the duration of the block (about 2 seconds). Carefully timed blocks are rewarded with stunning your opponent, creating optimal time to attack. You'll only be able to block when the move is available so there will be times where you'll have to quickly dodge or suffer some hits.
Gotta Catch 'Em All!
As you progress through the ranks by winning matches, you'll be able to find and add new Rangers to your roster. All the characters you can unlock fall into one of two categories:
- Leader: the character you'll be controlling through the fight.
- Assist: the characters you can call upon to deal extra damage in a pinch.
While Assists are great, Leaders are the most valuable as you'll be making full use of them and their abilities. In addition the total health of your team will be the sum of your leader and your two chosen Assists.
As the game goes on you're able to strengthen your characters, increasing their health and unlocking new abilities. Thankfully, unlike many other Power Rangers games before, Legacy Wars makes each character unique (at least from what I've experienced so far) which is amazing considering there's Rangers from just about every season of the show and the movie, and I'm sure more to be added in the future.
Nothing Is For Free
Like every other Free-To-Play game on the market, there's micro-transactions ranging from 99 cents to $99.99. These transactions will get you Power Crystals, one of two forms of currency in the game.
Power Crystals can be used to immediately open Morph Boxes, the primary way to acquire new Rangers and power ups. You can only have 4 Morph Boxes at a time with so if you continue to fight (this game has no stamina bar, thank Zordon!) you will not receive Morph Boxes if you already have 4.
Also there's the daily deals such as the one pictured above, their designed to tempt players into spending $10 to unlock their favorite characters and I wouldn't be too surprised if that's the only way to unlock the Green Ranger as a Leader – the only character most fans even care to play as.
But, if you can get past this, you'll be happy to know the game not only looks good, but the load times are quick, controls are responsive, and the fights you'll partake in are PVP, which makes it more surprising that I haven't run into any connection issues so far.
So if you were ever looking for a Power Rangers game to play, this one might be able to keep you entertained for as long as the Power Rangers fandom is burning up inside of you—so basically until the movie hype dies down. So for now, It's Morphin' Time!
