Horror fans have been pretty excited about the upcoming Resident Evil title since its announcement. Going off first impressions, it has all the trappings of a solid horror game taking elements from a few familiar places.

Taking a queue from Ghost in the Shell, developers have been releasing bite-sized trailers showing particular aspects of the game to give gamers a feel for what to expect. The last two trailers showed off what combat will look like as well as the game's healing system. This time around, two more mini-trailers have come out for Resident Evil showing off its inspecting and puzzle solving elements.

The Devil In Small Details

The first trailer "A Closer Look" shows the protagonist fiddling around with a box. You'd think that'd make for a pretty boring trailer, but if you watch (and listen) closely, there's actually more to it than just picking up a box.

"How do you o- there it is."
"How do you o- there it is."

Where in most games you just pick up the box and press a button to open it, in Resident Evil around you actually have to look for the way to open it. In this example, it's just finding the latch on the box, but I imagine that some objects will be a little bit more elaborate as the game goes on. Also, reminiscent of The Last of Us, you're looking at it in real time. This would make for some very tense moments if you're looking for a key while trying to get away or hide. The other interesting bit is how sound plays a role in inspecting an object. Take a look at the video and see if you can hear what I'm talking about.

Did you catch it? When the box was tipped to its side, you can clearly hear a small object clanging around in there. It's like you're a kid trying to guess what your present is by shaking the box. In this case, however, it's not so much Christmas as it is a dark hellscape, but close enough. There's no more wasting time opening something empty, just shake the thing, listen, and then move on if you don't hear anything. Of course, they could also use this mechanic to trick you into overlooking something, but that'd be a pretty rude thing to do (which means it'll probably happen).

A Bit of Lateral Thinking

The second trailer is called "Imagination" and this little clip gives us a glimpse of the puzzle mechanic for the game. The trailer has you walking into a dimly lit room to find a single, bright light pointing to a painting on the wall.

Shadow puppet puzzle?
Shadow puppet puzzle?

The puzzle seems to involve filling in the spider with shadow. The only problem is it's pretty hard to find any single particular object that will do the job for you. It's not like there's an identical spider carving sitting somewhere in the room. That'd be too easy, right?

So the task then is to somehow find the right combination of things to get the job done. I don't know about you but that sounds like it would take a bit of imagination. Check out the full trailer below.

With those two trailers down, we only have two more to go in this particular run of clips. So far we've been treated to a lot of very cool game elements that look like they'll make for a pretty great experience either on the screen or in VR. Now we just have to wait to see what else the game has in store with the last two trailer installments.
