Leaking the medical records of Olympic athletes, taking down European TV stations, and manipulating the US presidential election from behind the scenes, the Russian hacker is becoming one of the iconic stars of 2016. The identity of these cheeky scamps remain a mystery, so we can't yet comment on whether they're 90s Angelina Jolie pixie-cut sexy, or as Donald Trump confidently asserts, obese and maybe Chinese?
What we do know, however, is that apart from all that boring stuff, Russian hackers have also been sticking it to the man by releasing to the public those devastating secrets that Blizzard Entertainment don't want you to know. Recently these Shadowrunners busted out the long-lost WarCraft: Lord of the Clans adventure game. Now, in between re-routing the mainframe and doing sick skateboard tricks, they've leaked sweet new Overwatch secrets.
New Overwatch Hero is sexy, probably Mexican hacker Sombra, leaked by probably Russian hackers of unknown sexiness
So what do we know about Sombra? The image was apparently hacked from Blizzard's employee site, and shows us her appearance with a bunch of bio text that is unfortunately incomplete. Appropriately enough (maybe too appropriate, say the voices from inside my tinfoil hat) she is described as "one of the world's best and most notorious hackers...recruited by the mysterious Talon organization."
Her name is the Spanish word for 'Shadow', and her bio mentions her association with a Mexican gang, so a strong implication that Sombra is Mexican herself. I think this is pretty cool, as I enjoy Overwatch's diverse cast and think the number of playable Mexican video game characters could do with upping.
Whispers in the shadows
Fans of Overwatch lore know that the name Sombra has been teased in the past. During Ellohime's pre-beta stream of Overwatch, Ellohime discovered a table in Dorado's LumériCo power plant's control room with three classified manila file folders...one labeled "SOMBRA [CLASIFICADO]. Some terminals in the area also display blinking error messages which read, "ACCESSO NO AUTORIZADO: Protocolo Sombra" ("UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS: Sombra Protocol"). With the September 22nd PTR patch, the terminals in the power plant were changed to display "ACCESSO NO AUTORIZADO: Protocolo Sombra V2.3". In-game newspapers and terminals also hinted a global hacking spree related to LumériCo.
Sombra is also likely an associate of popular Overwatch hero Reaper. When he spawns on Dorado, Reaper will occasionally say, "Where's Sombra when you need her?". Reaper's real name, Gabriel Reyes, also suggests mutual Hispanic connections.
Halloween event and skins leaked
The other leaked image teases a special Overwatch Halloween event, complete with spooky alternate skins. The text above the Sombra image seems to describe some of the gameplay.
All pretty exciting stuff, and while the hints have been out there for a long time, the leak has yet to be confirmed by Blizzard. I believe, but it's just possible that those mysterious cyber-ninjas are playing us for fools, and what has really been hacked is...OUR...MINDS!
What do you think, 1337 h4XX0rs of the internet? True or false?
