The Star Wars universe has given us some absolutely fantastic games over the years, but it's also notable for the long list of games that never saw the light of day. One of these ill-fated titles includes Star Wars: First Assault, a first-person shooter with a multiplayer focus along the lines of #CallofDuty. But an online leak has provided gamers with an opportunity to see what might have been.
LucasArts was working on Star Wars: First Assault shortly before they were purchased by Disney and shut down in 2012. Now, an online leak has enabled #Xbox owners to get their hands on a playable early version of the game.

Star Wars: First Assault was the stuff of industry gossip and rumor for years until 2015, when a leaked video showed off some early stage gameplay. Based on the video, it looked like Star Wars: First Assault was gunning for the mainstream multiplayer shooter market.

The version in the video is pretty rough and doesn't show us any bots but it does showcase some cool-looking maps, and notably, some serious heavy-duty guns that aren't the usual fare for Star Wars-style blasters.
Star Wars: First Assault was focused on 8v8 multiplayer battles across relatively small maps, with a variety of different weapons. Interestingly, it was intended to be a prologue to a LucasArts-developed Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
However, once #Disney took over the #StarWars IP, the license was given to EA, leading to the rebooted #StarWarsBattlefront series we have today. Given the mainstream-focused thrust of Star Wars: First Assault, some might say that this was for the best.
Then again, I can't help but admire the gritty, detailed environments boasted by even the early version footage. Maybe the gameplay wouldn't have been revolutionary, but did we miss out on a stylish Star Wars shooter with solid FPS fundamentals?
Well, now you can play Star Wars: First Assault and decide for yourself! An early beta version of Star Wars: First Assault has leaked online so you can play the game for free, so long as you have a modded #Xbox360.
Now, it's only fair to warn you that Microsoft takes dim view of modding your Xbox 360, which will void its warranty. But if you like to live dangerously, you can get your hands on the Star Wars: First Assault files here.
For the rest of us, there's still Star Wars: Battlefront II coming on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 this year! Check out the full trailer below:
Although Star Wars: First Assault will never be fully completed, early versions of games can provide fascinating historical insights into game development. The game industry isn't good at preserving this kind of data, and it often falls to pirates or concerned individuals to take matters into their own hands, sometimes with interesting results later down the line.
So if you're a fan of Star Wars games and check out Star Wars: First Assault, keep an eye on future game releases. Aspects of cancelled games have a way of showing up later, and this case might not be so different.
