Yesterday, Niantic made an announcement teasing the next major update for Pokémon GO. Here's how the new feature will work: When you earn a medal, the game will grant a catch bonus for Pokémon of a certain type (Psychic, Flying etc.). These new bonuses will be effective for capturing Pokémon of a related type. As Niantic explains, "when you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal, your bonus to catch Fire-type Pokémon such as Charmander, Vulpix and Ponyta increases."
How does it work?
If you want to focus on working your way up these medal tiers, you can do so by catching multiple Pokémon of the same type. For Pokémon of multiple types, your bonus will be the average for each type. E.g. your catch bonus against Pidgey (Normal and Flying) would be the average of your Normal-type and Flying-type bonuses.
Once you've got some bonuses under your belt, it should give you an edge against those hard-to-capture rare Pokémon. Pokémon type specialization is a common way for experienced players to add a twist to their games, but this is a rare mechanical benefit designed to reward repeat catches.
