So far in 2017, the PlayStation Plus monthly free games list has mostly been underwhelming. While a few nice games popped up, like 2014's Little Big Planet 3 and the excellent-but-barely-known indie Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, fans have been disappointed this year with the games offered as part of their $9.99 per month PS Plus subscription.

So it's a treat to see May's free PS Plus games, saving the day, headlining with two excellent, critically acclaimed titles well-worth the price of admission: Abzu and Tales From The Borderlands.

Here's the full list:

  • Tales from the Borderlands (PS4)
  • Abzu (PS4)
  • Blood Knights (PS3)
  • Port Royale 3: Pirates and Merchants (PS3)
  • Laser Disco Defenders (PS Vita, cross Buy with PS4)
  • Type: Rider (PS Vita, cross Buy on PS4)

The Gorgeous Abzu

Abzu, the meditative deep sea exploration game, is one of the best indies to come out of 2016. It's an absolute staple for anyone who needs a calming, chill-out game in their library. Plus, it's a fantastic and gentle way to introduce your non-gamer friends and family to the wonderful world of video games. Simply put: everyone should have the opportunity to explore Abzu's depths.

And The Irreverent Tales From the Borderlands

Tales From the Borderlands, a story-driven episodic take on Borderlands lore, is one of Telltale's best games yet. It's much faster-paced than their Walking Dead titles, has some serious heavy-hitters in the voice acting department (Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Chris Hardwick, Nolan North), and is a great balance of genuinely goofy and genuinely heartwarming. This is required playing for anyone who has ever been skeptical of Telltale or episodic games.
