Red Dead Redemption 2 is the upcoming sequel to Rockstar Games' wild west sandbox Red Dead Redemption. The original game was released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, receiving both critical and commercial success. Since then desperadoes have been keeping an ear to the ground for rumors of a follow-up. And there's a mean-looking posse heading up over the horizon.

- Red Dead Redemption 2 "map leak" and prequel rumors
This summer Red Dead Redemption was made backwards compatible with Xbox One, sparking a new wave of interest in the title.
Back in 2014 Strauss Zelnick, CEO of publisher Take-Two Interactive, confirmed that Red Dead would return and be part of an ongoing franchise:
"I pretty much know the ones that I can assure you are permanent. It's obvious that GTA is a permanent franchise as long as we keep delivering this incredible quality; it seems quite obvious that Red Dead is a permanent franchise, again with the same caveat, or Borderlands, for example, and NBA and others."
This means that we would theoretically see Red Dead supported as a long-running franchise years into the future, with further sequels coming out after Red Dead Redemption 2.
We still don't have a lot of detailed information, but there have also been a few convincing leaks concerning Red Dead Redemption 2 dropping here and there. Check out this supposed map leak below:
TechRadar claims that the source of the leaked map also confirmed that the game will take place before the events of Red Dead Redemption, in a location to the east.

Read Dead Redemption 2 Story and Location
The leaked map image above suggests that the story will actually be a prequel, as the map lacks the presence of railroads in the Great Plains, but includes caravan camps and settlements (as distinct from towns). Red Dead Redemption was set in the last days of the old west, with a new modern era fast approaching. It makes sense for the sequel to preserve the wild west feel by exploring the past.
The trailer shows off some absolutely gorgeous natural scenery, and does appear to tease at the 'wilder' west of the untamed frontier. But so far there's not enough information to definitively call it.
Another point of interest is the inclusion of New Bordeaux - a New Orleans inspired location from publisher 2K's game Mafia 3. So it looks like the next Red Dead will be in a shared universe with Mafia 3, exploring the wild history of the swamplands.
It's also significant that John Marston, protagonist of Red Dead Redemption, dies at the end of the game, so if fans of the character hope to play as him again they'd better hope these rumors of a prequel are true. Rockstar's teaser images show a party of seven characters, which we guess is likely to represent Marston's old outlaw gang. The trailer also ends with a gang of seven riding into the sunset. Whether all or any of these will be protagonists or player characters remains to be seen.
