The 10 Best Dogs In Video Games
When it comes to awesome dogs, video games are the place to find them. They might be your only friend in a #horror game, or your companion on a super-secret spy mission, but no matter what, you know they're going to be rad. Unless they're mutated zombie dogs, fuck them.
10. Dogmeat - Fallout Series
Almost every game in the #Fallout series offers you the chance to team up with Dogmeat. Though it's not technically the same dog each time (obviously), I like to believe that it's always the same Dogmeat in spirit.
Despite the endless horrors of the wastes, this courageous canine throws himself fearlessly at enemies with unwavering loyalty, which secures him a spot on this list.
9. Rex - 'Fallout: New Vegas'
What's better than a dog? A robot dog! I may love Dogmeat, but Fallout: New Vegas' Rex is undoubtedly the superior pup. This cyborg dog possesses all the loyalty and bravery of Dogmeat and can sniff out hidden enemies as well. Though his brain isn't what it once was, you can always replace it with a selection of fresh new ones that'll grant him awesome perks and ensure he remains a good boy for a few centuries more.
8. Toby - 'Sherlock Holmes: Crimes And Punishments'
Sometimes even the most diligent detective needs a hand, or a paw, and in Sherlock Holmes: Crimes And Punishments, Toby is just that. As Sherlock Holmes's smellhound, he helps the famous sleuth out when he requires a nose to track down some peculiar scents.
Unusually for dogs in #VideoGames, you actually get to play as Toby from the first-person perspective, complete with smell-o-vision for tracking down clues. If only more games got in on the deep dog simulation gameplay.
7. Amaterasu - 'Okami'
It almost feels unfair to put Okami's Amaterasu on this list 'cause, you know, she's technically a wolf—also she's a god, which gives her a bit of an advantage over mundane mortal dogs. Still, she's such a beloved badass she has to have a place on this list. After all, what's a god but a dog turned backwards?
6. Semimaru - 'Tenchu: Wrath Of Heaven'
You'd think they'd be cat people, especially considering they used their eyes to tell the time, but even ninjas appreciate man's best friend. In Tenchu: Wrath Of Heaven Semimaru is a loyal friend to the ninjas of Tenchu, appearing to distract or kill guards whenever a treat is dropped to reward him.
That would be good enough to secure him a place on this list, but in the third Tenchu game, he actually becomes playable as a badass dog-ninja wielding dual blades. I guess he's a shinobi-inu.
5. K.K. Slider - 'Animal Crossing'
Not just man's best friend, sometimes a dog can be man's best neighbor as well. K.K. Slider is one of the many adorable villagers in #AnimalCrossing, a hippy hound with a penchant for shredding on his guitar.
Among the sometimes demanding, neurotic or downright greedy villagers of Animal Crossing, K.K. Slider is a breath of chill air. He's so mellow in fact, that he doesn't even ask for payment! What a champ.
4. Duck Hunt Dog - 'Duck Hunt'
If any dog can rival Amaterasu for immortal godhood, it's probably the Duck Hunt dog. This invincible trickster spirit seems to exist only to collect your poultry offerings and mock you for your failures every time you miss a shot.
As his laughter washes over you, one might be tempted to take vengeance against this agent of chaos, this Loki-esque mischief spirit, but beware, your mortal weapons are useless against him. Bullets bounce off his hide, the fatal force of the metal shot may as well be a light breeze; nothing can stop Duck Hunt dog.
You might be wondering, after all this slander, why he's on the list of best dogs. The answer is simple: I fear what he'd do if I left him off it.
3. D-Dog - 'Metal Gear Solid V'
Among the triple-crossing-triple-agents working for quadruple-layered conspiracies that are probably all controlled by nanites somehow in #MetalGearSolid5, there's only one person you can truly trust. Friends may betray you, lovers may leave, soldiers may get uncomfortably excited by you choking them and make training weird, but D-Dog is always there for you.
Like Dogmeat, Rex and Semimaru, D-Dog is a fearless and unwavering companion; he can take out guards, distract enemies and even sniff out medicinal plants and resources. He also wears a cool eyepatch that matches your own, which is both badass and totally adorable.
2. Pompidou - 'Life Is Strange'
Pompidou from #LifeIsStrange may not attack your enemies, he may not sniff out secret treasures, he may not even be on your side most of the time, but it's hard to deny he's a real good boy.
Pompidou, like his owner Frank, is a rough gem with a good heart deep down. This former fighting dog is a loyal and loving pup, who knows a bad guy when he sees them. Though he might be a little hostile at first, he deserves a spot on the list for sheer character.
Also if you threw the bone in the road you're a monster.
1. Sif - 'Dark Souls'
This massive pup may technically be a Wolf, but that's basically just a cooler dog, so it totally counts. When it comes to loyalty, nobody outdoes Sif. After her master was consumed by the abyss, Sif stayed behind to guard his grave. Not only is she a loyal companion, but she also wields a giant sword in her mouth, which basically makes her the ultimate guard dog.
What makes Sif top this list, besides being totally awesome, is how tragic she is to fight. Once you get her down to low enough health, the poor pup stumbles and limps, flailing clumsily with her sword. This lead tons of players to scour the internet and game files for some way to spare the poor wolf's life, though unfortunately, there's none.
Even more tragically, if you complete the Dark Souls DLC and meet adorable little baby Sif in the past, she recognizes your smell as the person who put her master to rest and saved the world. She lets out a long, mournful howl at the job she has to do, before reluctantly taking up her sword to fight you off. Poor Sif, we know you didn't want to hurt us.
But where there's a good dog, there's always a Naughty Dog:
