2016 was a damn good year for games. But 2017 has clearly asked someone to hold its beer. Taking a look back at this year in mid-May, we've already had Resident Evil 7, Nier: Automata, Horizon Zero Dawn, Night in the Woods, Thimbleweed Park, Everything, Tides of Numenera, For Honor, Persona 5, Prey and god damn The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Now that's a year for video games, my friends!

The Most Anticipated Upcoming Games Of 2017 & Beyond

But 2017 ain't done yet, not by a long shot. It's started with a bang and it means to continue the trend of releasing a new masterpiece every month. How we're going to have the time to play all of them is anyone's guess, but my god are we going to try.

With all of these greats behind us, let's focus on the games to come in 2017. Here are all of our most anticipated upcoming for the year ahead. If you've got other titles that you're excited for, be sure to throw them into the comments!

1. Sea of Thieves

  • Developer/Publisher: Rare/Microsoft
  • Release Date: TBD 2017
  • Platform(s): PC, Xbox One

Probably my most anticipated game of all 2017 — which unfortunately means I'll have to try and get my sleeping Xbox One out of storage and dust the sh*t out of it — is set to be Rare's return to the world of gaming because who the hell counts those Kinect games. Charting course for the high seas, the makers of Banjo-Kazooie will be giving us the multiplayer pirate experience we've always dreamed of.

But in order to conquer the waves in Sea of Thieves, we'll all have to work together. We'll be letting loose sails, raising anchors, firing cannons, repairing holes in the hull and getting very, very drunk. I honestly can't think of a better way to spend your time.

Rare have been quiet on the whole release date front, but we're sure this'll be arriving at some point in 2017. There's no way this'll turn out to be another Scalebound... right? Nah. I'll see you all on my ship once Sea of Thieves arrives for Xbox One and PC!

2. Middle-earth: Shadow of War

  • Developer/Publisher: Monolith Productions/Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
  • Release Date: August 22, 2017
  • Platform(s): PC, Xbox One & PS4

Arriving seemingly out of the blue in late 2014, Shadow of Mordor proved to be one of the greatest — if not the greatest — Lord of the Rings games ever made. It was also one of the best games of the year and introduced the Nexus system, one of the more unique gaming concepts to surface in recent years.

Now all of that is being built upon for the game's direct sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, this new open world game will continue the tale of the ranger Talion and the spirit elf lord Celebrimbor who shares his body. They'll be amassing all sorts of abilities in the struggle against the powers that be! Sauron and Nazgul forces are everywhere and we'll be recruiting units from several different races — including Uruk-Hai and Olog-hai — in our mission to obliterate them all. We can anticipate a pretty great experience from Middle-earth: Shadow of War, friends.

3. Red Dead Redemption 2

  • Developer/Publisher: Rockstar Games
  • Release Date: Fall 2017
  • Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One

Westerns are a genre criminally under-explored in video games. Red Dead Redemption tackled the setting in style, with a sweeping, emotionally impactful story to boot. Rockstar Games is the undisputed champion of open world crime-em-ups, and expectations for run rampant as a result.

Everyone would have expected a sequel to Red Dead Redemption to boast fluid gunplay, a vibrant open world and a well-crafted story. What they might not have expected is how beautiful it seems to be. The trailer below is replete with vistas and landscapes so gorgeous that without playing a minute of the actual game, I already expect Red Dead Redemption 2 to be one of the best-looking nature games in history.

We don't know too much about the game at this moment in time, but what we have uncovered regarding the plot of Red Dead Redemption 2 makes us think that we're in for a catch up with some old friends and enemies.

4. God of War

  • Developer/Publisher: SIE Santa Monica Studio/Sony
  • Release Date: TBD 2017
  • Platform(s): PS4

Kratos is back, people, and he still looks pretty angry. Only this time, he's got a little Kratos to worry about (no, they haven't brought back that sex mini-game, get your mind out of the gutter). With a son by his side and Last of Us vibes abounding, looks to be a beautiful and much appreciated departure from what's come before.

With more emotional depth granted to one of gaming's most iconic... icons, gorgeous graphics, a new perspective and more visceral and realistic combat pushing the PS4 to its limits, God of War looks to be one of those gaming experiences to board the hype train for.

5. Detroit: Become Human

  • Developer/Publisher: Quantic Dream/Sony
  • Release Date: TBD 2017
  • Platform(s): PS4

David Cage is back! And we know what that means, a shed ton of QTEs! Nah but his games can be fun, and, in all honesty, Detroit: Become Human looks like an incredible video game experience. Showed off at E3 2016, Cage's follow up to Beyond Two Souls will take a leaf out of Heavy Rain's book by featuring several playable characters, all of whom are androids.

We'll be exploring what it means to be human, killing off characters a little too early, screwing up conversations with NPCs and enjoying even more rain in sunny Detroit. Check out the trailer below:

The game's developer cast hundreds of actors from Los Angeles, London and Paris before commencing a year-and-a-half-long process of shooting and animation—it also took him two years to write the script. I think we can look forward to a really interesting game on the PS4 later this year, folks. Let us know what you think of below!

6. Star Wars: Battlefront 2

  • Release Date: TBD 2017
  • Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One & PC

means to fix all of the problems we had with the original. We'll be getting a completely fresh story in its single player campaign, tons of updates to the multiplayer, characters and settings from the Clone Wars, the original trilogy and the new films, and more badass Star Wars sound effects than we can handle.

We don't know too much about what DICE have in store for us at this time, but based on the promise of the original and how beautiful that game could be, I think we'll be in for a great time when the game launches later in 2017. Are you excited for Star Wars: Battlefront 2?

7. Spider-Man

  • Developer/Publisher: Insomniac Games/Sony
  • Release Date: TBD 2017
  • Platform(s): PS4

I honestly can't believe they're making a new Spider-Man game. My level of excitement cannot be contained. Not only does it look spectacularly beautiful, but it'll be brought to us by the people behind Sunset Overdrive — a must play for anyone with an Xbox One.

The PS4 exclusive will see us swinging through Manhattan as the friendly neighborhood webslinger, taking down bad guys, unleashing tons of terrible quips and generally crying at the nostalgia on PS4.

Seriously, have there been any Spider-Man games since the glory days of the PlayStation 2 that have topped them for web-slinging delights? I don't think so. But the degree of faith I have in Insomniac tells me that we're in for something truly spectacular with . I can't wait. I can't wait. Holy sh*t I can't wait.

8. Kingdom Hearts 3

  • Release Date: TBD 2017/TBD 2018
  • Platform(s): PS4 & Xbox One

, which at this point might be the most anticipated video game in the industry, is rumored to have a 2017 release date. Whether this actually pans out or not remains to be seen — the elusive Square Enix title has been in the works since 2006, and the answer to "when does it come out" has been an emphatic "eventually" ever since.

This is Kingdom Hearts 3 that we're talking about here though. The long-awaited third major installment in a series that put fun-for-the-whole-family action/adventure games on the map. With stunning visuals, great characters and tons of worlds for all of us to explore, what's not to like about the impending release of this long-awaited sequel?

9. Destiny 2

Developer/Publisher: Bungie

Release Date: September 8, 2017

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One & PC

The sequel is finally upon us. Due to be released in September of last year, numerous internal problems resulted in the delay of the official sequel to 2014's Destiny for an entire year. will see us all charting the depths of space for loot, aliens to shoot and companions to enlist. We won't just be getting a bog standard DLC expansion this time either, this is the real deal.

Set one year after the events of Destiny: Rise of Iron, we now see the Red Legion faction of the Cabal attacking The Last City with overwhelming forces. The Guardians have been stripped of their powers and forced to flee the Tower. Now they're going to have to come together in this new world to amass new powers and eventually take the fight to the enemy in what will hopefully be a far better experience than the first game! Are you excited for Destiny 2?
