Back in Season 5 of The Walking Dead, the season premiere had 17.29 million viewers watching to see if Rick Grimes became the next meal for the cannibals at Terminus. That's 260,000 more viewers than the Season 7 premiere, which, thanks to Negan & Lucille, is saying a lot. With Pokemon GO clocking in at 65 million monthly users back in April of this year, one might assume some of those are also fans of AMC's hit show.
If you fall in that group, put down your smartphone and listen to this: the Finnish developer Next Games has partnered up with AMC to bring you the next big thing in the augmented reality gaming. Here's what AMC's twitter page had to say about the imminent release of The Walking Dead: Our World.
While you're flipping your shit Negan style, here's some replies from fans who are also obviously just a little excited about the news.
Even SpongeBob chimed in
There are some naysayers out there, but we don't need that kind of negativity in a post-apocalyptic landscape filled with walking corpses.
AMC has already released a trailer, even though there isn't an official release date for the game itself. Watch it below, but beware; there will be Daryl.
That's right—you're not alone in this. Rick, Daryl, and Michonne are right there to help you kill some zombies. CG Daryl, Rick and Michonne, but that's close enough, right?
Here's the official game description from Next Games' website:
The Walking Dead: Our World, first-of-a-kind location based augmented reality mobile game will hit Apple App Store and Google Play soon. Fight walkers on the streets, in the park, on your sofa, wherever and whenever you feel like it. You don’t need to face the apocalypse alone; as of now, at least three of your favorite characters from AMC’s The Walking Dead will fight by your side.
But how will the zombie killing app fare against its Pokemon catching competition?
Pokemon Vs. Walkers
Being the huge #TWD fan that I am, I'd love to say that The Walking Dead: Our World will obliterate Pokemon GO on the app store. Unfortunately, there are just too many factors are working against the upcoming AR game to say that with a straight face. Time is one of the biggest. Pokemon fans as a group have been walking the earth much longer than #TheWalkingDead fans. After the imaginary little creatures arrived in Japan in 1996, and went worldwide just two years later, multiple generations have been #Pokemon fans for going on 20 years now. Of course, multiple generations also love The Walking Dead, but the show has only had seven years to gain its following. Time is on Pokemon GO's side.
With time, comes fans. And with more fans the more number of dollars will be spent on all those fancy weapons you'll have to buy in-game.
But still. Fighting zombie hordes alongside Rick, Daryl, and Michonne? That virtually guarantees The Walking Dead: Our World will hit the #1 spot in both the Google Play and Apple app stores the day it gets released, and it'll hold onto that top spot for at least 28 days.
Even though that release date is still up in the air, now would be a good time to stock up on those app store gift cards. In the meantime, visit Next Games' website and sign up for updates, and let me know in the comments how excited you are for this app!
