Netflix is planning to create a new show which will be based on the immensely popular books and video games that make up the Witcher Saga. The games were originally based on a series of eight novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Sapkowski stated that:

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing."

Sapkowski is usually very strict about adaptations of his novels, so allowing Netflix to produce this is a big step forward for him and the Witcher series as a whole. Tomas Baginski — who has directed the intro movies for all three Witcher games — will direct at least one episode per season. The game is well known for its immersive and intense scenes so this will immediately have fans salivating for more information.

The stories that the series will be based on are not clear, as of yet, but the executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown have stated that:

“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

The subtle blend of comedy, action, romance and awkward sex scenes will surely make a fine addition to Netflix. Netflix have found success with creating their own original series with the likes of Stranger Things and 13 Reasons Why having a very high level of popularity and success. With The Witcher's slightly darker and more adult-orientated approach, Netflix could be onto another winner here.

Platige Image, a Polish production and visual effects house, will co-produce the show. Executive Producers Baginski and Jarek Sawko have emphasized that some of the books' subtexts will not be lost when the adaptation hits our screens. They stated that:

"There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”

We do not know who has been cast as of yet. Indeed, many creative decisions have yet to be made in this early stage of development.
