Over time, the Grand Theft Auto series has become well-known for its numerous easter eggs and secrets, spanning everything from pop-culture references to lewd in-game billboards.

With so many easter eggs to be found, we look back on this 20-year-old series to rank Grand Theft Auto's best kept secrets.

#10 Message From The Developers

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto III
  • Where: Bedford Point, Staunton Island

Developers opted not to fix the player boundaries, and instead decided to leave a fun message to let the fans know that their apparent incompetence was in fact deliberate.

#9 The Frozen Alien

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto V
  • Where: Prologue mission, just before you cross the train tracks

A thankfully frozen nod to the alien themes found in GTA V. There are many weird and wonderful easter eggs in the game, but I feel this is one of the best mysteries thanks to its relative subtlety

#8 Internet Predator Trap

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Where: Littlelacysurprisepageant.com

Rockstar decided to include a fake pedophile sting operation in GTA IV which is an interesting creative decision to say the least. When you type 'littlelacysurprisepageant.com' into the browser in-game, the website above appears instead, quickly earning you a 5-star wanted level.

#7 Foo Cars

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto II
  • Where: Everywhere

It's nowhere near as smart as some of the other crude jokes in the series, but the fact that there aren't even any 'Foo' cars driving around Anywhere, USA, makes it all the funnier.

#6 Narwhal? Bacon?

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto V
  • Where: Cypress Flats, under the highway

With this niche reference to the website Reddit, Rockstar acknowledge the secret code phrase created to identify a fellow user of the website. One will ask "When does the narwhal bacon?" and the correct response is "The narwhal bacons at midnight". Weird, but cool.

#5 Apartment 3c

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Where: Ocean Beach

I wouldn't call this a particularly 'nice' homage, but it's certainly a fitting tribute to the popular culture that inspired much of GTA III's 80s-set sequel. A hotel room complete with blood and chainsaw references the brutal scene from the movie Scarface.

#4 There Are No Easter Eggs

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Where: Gant Bridge, San Fierro

Rockstar makes another one of their meta easter egg jokes in San Andreas. After jet-packing to the top of the Gant bridge you're treated to this rude message as a 'reward' for being such a curious / nosy player.

#3 The Infinity Murders

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto V
  • Where: Blaine County

By following clues written on walls around the map you can discover the grim fates of the Infinity Killer's eight victims. At the end of the deathly trail you find the prison that Merle—the killer—ended up in, and then a final clue giving you the location of the bodies that he disposed of.

#2 Jack Thompson In All But Name

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Where: Final Interview (mission)

Jack Thompson is a real life lawyer known for his hostile campaigning against violent video games. After many disputes, Rockstar seemed to grow tired of him and created a mission at the end of GTA IV in which you kill a lawyer whose dialogue closely resembles that of Thompson's. Though he threatened legal action, Thompson has since been permanently disbarred for misconduct.

#1 Bigfoot

  • Game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Where: ???

There are reports of this hulking beast lurking in the woods of San Andreas, attacking or running away from players. But the real question is, does this easter egg even exist?

According to Rockstar founder Terry Donovan it doesn't, as much as the team wants it to be. Despite this, there are still believers out there, which goes to show that some conspiracies cannot be quelled.

This is actually revisited in GTA V where you can spot Bigfoot during a side mission.
