It's been 10 years since Italian drummer Andrea Vadrucci aka Vadrum gifted humanity with his rhythmic expansion of the Mario theme in a legendary 2007 YouTube video.
83 million views later, the percussionist-god-turned-YouTuber has brought his attention to another classic video game character in a new video. Here, all the quirky little songs from the 1991 game Sonic the Hedgehog, starring Sega's poster boy and dominator of speed-freaky child minds in the early '90s, are given a funky drum overhaul.
8 Minutes Of Sonic Smashing
Andrea Vadrucci is, on top of being a pretty talented drum player, a huge gaming enthusiast. And it seems like old school video game characters hold a special place in his heart. That or he just really loves to play over simple 8-bit music.
No seriously, this is what the guy writes in the description of the above video:
"The amazing music (composed by Masato Nakamura and Yuzo Koshiro) is from the 8-bit version of the game, released in 1991 (yeah, more than 25 years ago!) for the Sega Master System and Game Gear; oh man, how much I LOVED it back in the days! And in the same way I loved every single thing of this video, from the idea to the final stage."
So much love.
You Need No Less Than 12 Cymbals
Vadrum is working with a double pedal kick drum (causing that sweet, heavy metal-like sound), four toms, three percussions, two snares and 12 (!) cymbals. Less won't do if you have any intention of recapturing the great complexity and genius of the original Sonic the Hedgehog soundtrack.

The individual Sonic tunes are not separated by any noticeable breaks; the Sonic session is just one long 8 minute medley and only the most hardcore fans would be able to differentiate each and every single song from one other. All we know is that it sounds good when Vadrum plays into the Green Hill Zone theme at 1:40.
Let's end this piece quoting Nick from Freaks and Geeks:
I believe in God, man. I’ve seen him, I’ve felt his power. He plays drums for L̶e̶d̶ Z̶e̶p̶p̶e̶l̶i̶n̶ Sonic and his name is J̶o̶h̶n̶ B̶o̶n̶h̶a̶m̶ Andrea, baby!
What's your favorite piece of video game music and which instruments would you play to cover it? Did you notice all of the tunes in his 8-minute rendition?
