The good ol' sniper rifle. If you're a first-person shooter enthusiast, chances are you love these weapons of long-range decimation. There is really nothing like headshotting some clueless noob from afar, knowing they sit behind their screen baffled by what happened.

This is especially satisfying in a massive, open world battlefield shooter like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Here, you can set yourself up nicely on some desolate hill, picking off one helpless target after another from a relatively safe spot.

There is only one issue. Sniper rifles are damn hard to come across in . They don't come with your class/role/soldier kit and you can't purchase them with currency earned through a next-level killing spree.

No, you have to find them on your own. There are four sniper rifles in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds but only one of them is actually on the map from the beginning of each match. The others are found in Air Drops.

Three out of the four sniper rifles in the game are found in Air Drops. These happen randomly throughout a match when a plane drops a crate of supplies to the-ammo-and-weapon-starved competitors on the map.

The planes can be heard long before they drop their payload if you're somewhat near. If you hear the buzzing sound of a plane, it's a good idea to locate the drop's location. Then you can decide if you want to go to or avoid the place. An Air Drop generally means trouble as other players are going to be looking for the drop as well. It's risky going there as an ill-equipped player though.

Airdrops can drop pretty much anything valuable, though they often contain weapons and ammunition, which is sorely needed in most situations. It's in these that you'll be able to find the three most powerful sniper rifles in the game.

Below we'll go over each sniper rifle, highlighting their power. Here's our guide to the best sniper rifles in Battlegrounds.

1. The Karabiner 98 Kurz

This was the primary German service rifle until the end of World War II. It's a bolt-action rifle that is surprisingly accurate at long range. Millions were captured by the Soviets after the war and widely distributed as military aid. The Karabiner 98k therefore continues to appear in conflicts across the world

  • Where to find it: Airdrops or military weapon spawn locations on the map. Look near military compounds like Sosnovka Military Base or Mylta Power Plant.
  • Pros: Easiest sniper rifle to get a hold of. Decent range and power.
  • Cons: The weakest sniper in the game. Low firing rate compared to other weapon types.
  • Ammunition: 7.62mm in 5-bullet magazines. Max ammo capacity is 500.

2. The M24

The M24 is a military and police rifle used by the United States Army until 2010. It's a highly customizable weapon that can use many different scopes, clips and other accessories, which is why the weapon is referred to as a Sniper Weapon System and not just a rifle.

  • Where to find it: Airdrops.
  • Pros: Long range and great stopping power.
  • Cons: Slow rate of fire and the hardships of actually finding the weapon in an airdrop.
  • Ammunition: 7.62mm in 5-bullet magazines. Max ammo capacity is 500.

3. The AWM

The Arctic Warfare Magnus rifle is, in spite of its name not only usable in arctic warfare. It's perfectly capable of getting almost any job done in any climate imaginable. Used by the military in a wide range of countries, including the US, the UK, Russia and Germany, this weapon erases stuff at long range using big-ass, accurate bullets.

  • Where to find it: Airdrops.
  • Pros: The hardest hitting sniper in the game. Insane power and range. Capable of taking out anyone with a single shot.
  • Cons: Magnum ammo can be scarce and getting this weapon is a rare thing which will make you a target to other players.
  • Ammunition: .300 Magnum in 5-bullet magazines. Max ammo capacity is 500.

4. The SKS

The only semi-automatic, non bolt-action sniper rifle in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, this Soviet weapon trades range and power for rate of fire. In the '50s the Soviets took the SKS out of service and replaced it with the more known AK-47, but it continued to be manufactured across the Eastern Bloc. Today, it's a popular, inexpensive hunting rifle in the US and Canada.

  • Where to find it: Airdrops.
  • Pros: A really high rate of fire and larger clip size compared to other sniper rifles.
  • Cons: Less power and less range than any other sniper.
  • Ammunition: 7.62mm in 5-bullet magazines. Max ammo capacity is 500.
