It's still quite a ways off to the winter release of , but 's Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG has our back with this new, beautiful trailer for the upcoming Knights of the Eternal Throne expansion.

Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place very far away from Rogue One's storyline and in a whole different time, but we can't ignore that SWTOR has been home to some of the best cinematic storytelling in the Star Wars universe. Oh, and some of the best action, too – there's always some crazy good lightsaber combat in SWTOR's cinematics.

If you haven't seen any of trailers or cinematics from The Old Republic, this is a great one to start with. Check it out below:

What's Going On Here?

One big strength of a trailer like is that it functions pretty damn well as a stand-alone story within the Star Wars universe.

If you're not in the know about The Old Republic or the other Star Wars games, here's the lowdown to put the events of this trailer in context:

  • The Knights of the Eternal Throne expansion will take place after SWTOR's current expansion, Knights of the Fallen Empire
  • This trailer features Senya, a Knight of Zakuul
  • Senya is the former wife of Emperor Valkorian – he is seen in the trailer looming like only a bad guy can loom
  • Senya's daughter Vaylin, the girl in the trailer, is a major character in SWTOR
  • Senya and Valkorian's sons, Vaylin's brothers, were heavily featured in Knights of the Fallen Empire (see that trailer as well)
  • Empress Vaylin spearheads the Knights of the Eternal Throne storyline as she begins the Eternal Empire's conquest across the galaxy
  • The player, known as the Outsider, will pick sides and face off with the Eternal Empire in this expansion

There's plenty more information on the central characters of this story arc, and the features and updates within the expansion on The Old Republic's official website. The Knights of the Eternal Throne expansion releases on December 2 for PC.

Star Wars: The Old Republic might not be directly Rogue One-related, but we'll take whatever Star Wars goodness we can grab during the long wait to December.

Below are some of our favorite moments from the trailer, what are yours?
