Will Ferrell is set to star in an as-of-yet untitled comedy focused on eSports. The film's press release describes Will Ferrel's character as "an anomaly in a sport where players usually retire in their 20s due to slowing hand-eye coordination." Evil Geniuses and Fnatic, two of the world's best-known esports teams, are currently in talks to make an appearance in the film.
Will Ferrell starring in an eSports-themed film might come as a surprise, but perhaps it shouldn't. Throughout Ferrell's film career, he has appeared in a number of movies that tackle the culture surrounding American sports in a comedic way. Semi-Pro took on basketball, Blades of Glory tackled figure skating, and Talladega Nights focuses on the ongoing NASCAR phenomenon.
Going on two decades of Will Ferrell sports comedies, esports is just the latest in a series of sports parodies. Given the rise of eSports, with cash prizes in the millions and viewership rivaling the NFL for the largest eSports tournaments, this choice in focus isn't surprising — it's the obvious choice to make.
Legendary Entertainment will distribute the film in China while its partner, Universal Pictures, will handle worldwide distribution. The film will be written by Michael Kvamme and Jordan Dunn, writers most recently known for Spongebob Squarepants 3.
