Moana has been out for only a few days now and is already breaking records, and on track to join the elite group of films hitting the $1 billion mark this year - all of which are also produced and distributed by Disney.

However, many gamers and Disney fans like myself can't help but wonder, will we see Moana in Kingdom Hearts 3 or other future installments in the series? Given #Tangled and #BigHero6's inclusions in #KingdomHearts3, it's almost certain Moana, Maui, Pua, and Hei Hei will be joining Sora and Pals eventually.

But will they be joining us before or after Xehanort's reign comes to an end?

It's New, But Been In Development Since 2011

Following work on #PrincessAndTheFrog, which was directed by both Moana directors John Musker and Ron Clements, the duo started work on Moana in 2011, only one year after the release of Birth By Sleep and one year before Dream Drop Distance would be released. Kingdom Hearts 3 has been in high gear since it was first announced in 2013, which means Moana would have been well under way in production by the time work on the game began. So there may just be a possibility.

Diversity In KH Worlds

Dang, We've Had A Lot Of Worlds...
Dang, We've Had A Lot Of Worlds...

If there's one thing Tetsuya Nomura and the rest of the developers strive for in their selection process for each world in every Kingdom Hearts title, it's diversity. Sure, we've seen Olympus Coliseum and Wonderland more times than I can count, but there really aren't any other worlds like them.

With the inclusion of Big Hero 6's San Fansokyo and Tangled's Corona, we're going to see 2 entirely new worlds, which make Kingdom Hearts 3's current lineup incredibly different, but also lacking one important thing... Islands. (well, besides Destiny Islands)

Lilo And Stitch May Kick Moana Out

Okay if we don't see Elvis Stitch in Kingdom Hearts 3 I'm gonna be upset.
Okay if we don't see Elvis Stitch in Kingdom Hearts 3 I'm gonna be upset.

Lilo and Stitch was Disney's biggest animated hit after the '90s animation renaissance and introduced the world to our favorite furry blue alien-experiment thing, Stitch. Lilo and Stitch takes place, for most of the movie, on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, very similar to the Polynesian feel and area of Moana.

Lilo and Stitch has already been featured in the series, both as a summon in Kingdom Hearts 2 and as the world of Deep Space in Birth By Sleep. Because of this, #Disney and #SquareEnix is likely to do one of 3 things:

  • Trade in world diversity for multiple similar island worlds
  • Introduce audiences to Lilo and Stitch at the expense of not featuring Moana
  • Include a world based on Moana but keep fans from finally getting to see Lilo and Stitch

All of these choices provide both positive and negatives, but at the end of the day Disney gets to decide what movies get featured and which ones don't. If it were up to me however, I would opt for including Moana and having Stitch return as a summon, because the Heartless would simply blend better with Moana than Hawaii and Lilo and Stitch.
