Christmas has come early for fans of Psyonix's hyper-popular, vehicle soccer game. Rocket League, based on the studio's earlier game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, was released for Playstation and Windows on July 7th of this year. It quickly surpassed it's predecessor's 6.5/10 rating with a well-deserved 9/10 and exploded almost immediately into the e-sports realm. Over the past few months, paid updates like 'Revenge of the Battle Cars' and 'Back to the Future' focused on cosmetics, but this new announcement is a massive breakthrough for the game: we'll be seeing mutators and new game types in a matter of weeks! Let's take a look at some of the features:

1.) Game Types

The video showcases the four, new, main game types at the very beginning. We have CUBIC, which turns the ball into a cube and will definitely add some challenges to the physics of moving the ball. DEMOLITION is hazy; could players be set with timers to explode upon rundown, or do simple taps cause detonation? MOONBALL will likely involve a decrease in gravity or player weight, and possibly remove the ceiling off the field. BEACH BALL appears to increase the ball's size while possibly decreasing its mass, making it physically behave more like a beach ball. This is likely more of a mutator than a gametype, so let's move on to the next section.

2.) Mutators

The trailer moves on to list the mutators that will arrive with the update. Mutators are individual modifications that change something specific in the game, allowing for customized gameplay and matches. The mutators listed in the video are as follows:

  • Ball Bounce
  • Ball Max Speed
  • Ball Size
  • Ball Type
  • Ball Weight
  • Boost Amount
  • Boost Strength
  • Gravity
  • Match Length
  • Max Score
  • Pinball
  • Respawn Time
  • Slo Mo
  • Time Warp

While the player-controlled cars are vastly customizable, up until now the gamemode has been set in stone. With this update, the amount of customizable gameplay is going to go from zero to 100 all in one, fell swoop. Now while all of this material is more than enough reason for Rocket League hype to go through the roof, Psyonix dropped their major December update in the video as well, revealing:

3.) Hockey

That's right, the fields will turn to ice and the balls to pucks when December rolls around. From what the video shows, it looks like steering, passing and shooting the massive hockey puck will be much more difficult than the typical ball. The glimpse of this radically new game mode raises other questions as well: will it be compatible with mutators? Is hockey only going to be playable during winter? All these answers and more will come soon enough when the update drops in just a few weeks!

Are you excited for Rocket League's new features? Do you think it will boosts the game's popularity, or drive people away with all the confusion of new attributes? Sound off in the comments, and thanks for reading!
