Call of Duty is one of the biggest video games franchises ever to hit our disc drives with it's publisher Activision saying that it has made over $10 billion from the series's launch in 2003.

With 12 installments to the franchise, it's unsurprising that the well known run-and-gun campaigns have taken direct inspiration from our favourite action movies!

Call of Duty 2 / Saving Private Ryan

Being one of the most infamous and courageous attacks in wartime history, it's clear to understand why this was included so early on in the franchise.

Without comparing this mission to anything it will just look like a standardized take on D-Day but when compared to the opening of Saving Private Ryan (1998) you will notice a lot of similarities.

Key parts to notice would be Tom's Hanks character and the character you play as in the game both taking a fall as they leave the transport along with the transport on the left catching flames as soldiers run off it into the ocean and right at the start where a soldier on both transport throws up.

Call of Duty: Black Ops / Apocalypse Now

One of the few vehicle missions in the franchise seems loosely connected to a scene in 'Apocalypse Now', where the group are travelling up river only to be attacked from both sides by the locals.

All I can get a hold of is the trailer, no actual scenes unfortunately, but you get the idea!

Apocalypse Now features a group of soldiers travelling upstream on a military boat, stopping off at different places and getting ambushed on the way.

Call of Duty: World at War / Enemy at the Gates

The beginning of the mission 'Vendetta' is a clear homage to a scene in 'Enemy at the Gates', it's probably one of obvious translations from film to a movie out of the five.

Pretty cool, right? Now here it is again but with a little more Jude Law...

Not only is 'Vendetta' one of my favourite missions with it's realistic, brutal and horror feel to the Second World War, but it also does justice to 'Enemy at the Gates'.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare / Black Hawk Down

The mission in Modern Warfare, 'Shock and Awe' is another mission that feels directly ripped from the movie, 'Black Hawk Down'. You and several other marines take the battle to the air as well as the ground as you fight through the streets of a middle eastern town.

As you can see in the mission, you are diverted towards a crashed helicopter to save it's survivors, although this doesn't happen in the movie, it is still a clear homage to that event.

The most notable similarities would be the visual appearances and the vehicles used, both awfully similar to each other.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 / Red Dawn

The 1980's flick features a band of American teenagers coming together to defend their town from invading Soviet forces, sound familiar? The similarities between the Modern Warfare 2 mission 'Wolverines' are very cool here, the mission also features Soviet's invading an American town with a band of soldiers coming through to defend it.

The mission is also famously named after the squad of teens.

WOLVERINES! Although the mission doesn't show us a group of teenagers defending a town, the context of the whole mission is pretty much the same.

Did I list your favourite Call of Duty mission that closely resembles a film? Let me know about your favourite in the comments below!
