With 720 different species of Pokémon (721 if you count the unreleased newcomer Volcanion) spread across the lands, it's hard for any trainer to settle on a favorite. But, with voting for the world's first Pokémon Election now open, one winner will be crowned as the community's most popular Pocket Monster.

This isn't the first time that the Pokémon Company has run polls of this kind, but it is first to include the Pokédex's entire population. Though you might expect fan favorites like Pikachu to sweep the ballots, it'll be interesting to see which Pokémon will be elected as the community's definitive chosen one.

How Do I Vote?

If you live in Japan, you'll be able to make your personal pick in person at Pokemon Center retail outlets and selected Toys “R” Us branches.

However, you can also vote with your Nintendo 3DS console, via the 7 Spot Wi-Fi network at 7-Eleven stores. Every vote counts, so make sure you voice is heard!

What Happens To The Community Elected Winner?

Despite my personal campaign pushing "Geodude for President 2016," there's no actual political power at stake here. But there is still a very good reason to vote. The contest winner will become available as a free download when the Pokemon XY&Z movie comes to cinemas this summer. To take advantage of this prize, you'll need a 3DS and a copy of Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire.

I have a feeling this will skew voting in favor of some of the more illusive species around. Sorry, Caterpie. The polls are now open, with voting closing on May 8.

Who will you choose?
