With the announcement that the new Call Of Duty game will be called Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare the question needs to be asked - will we see an end to futuristic shooters any time soon? My greatest memories of Call of Duty hail back to the first two. I mean, who doesn't want to kill a fuck-tonne of Nazis?! The best part for me though was the rich history ingrained in these games. As a history buff I loved being immersed in real battles, against real enemies. I could see through the eyes of my ancestors and experience the true horrors of war.

The argument could be made that WWII has been overdone in games. Though I disagree, I do think there are many battles and wars that we have never seen (or haven't seen enough of) in the video game world. Below are my top picks for battles and wars I would love to see COD, or another game franchise (such as Medal of Honor - My favourite shooter!) set their next game campaign in.

American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865)

Union soldiers before Marye's Heights, Second Fredericksburg
Union soldiers before Marye's Heights, Second Fredericksburg

Details of the war: We all know the story. Abraham Lincoln gets elected and wants to abolish slavery. Some states in the South don't like this, and form the Confederacy. So they battle to the death. With a death toll of over 620,000 people it takes 4 years before this fight is over.

Possible Campaign Story: Oh the possibilities! How about a young man with high morals who is strongly against slavery. He joins the Union to fight for the right to earn his black friends freedom. Using muskets, swords and old-school weapons would make the fighting scenes intimate and bloody. With so many well known battles to weave the campaign through; Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Vicksburg to name a few, the story telling possibilities are endless. Plus it ends in a marvellous victory! As a non-American I don't know much about this war, and would find this game so exciting.

Weapons: Model 1832 Foot Sword, Model 1833 Dragoon Saber, Colt 1851 Navy Revolver, Remington Model 1858, Springfield Model 1861 Rifle, Springfield Model 1847 Musketoon, 12-pounder Napoleon canon, 8-inch siege mortar, Model 1841.

WW1 - Gallipoli Campaign (25 April 1915 – 9 January 1916)

Details of the war: A battle which may be unknown to many around the world, New Zealanders and Australians alike know a lot about this gruesome battle. Part of WWI, over 130,000 men were killed including; 87,000 Ottoman soldiers and 44,000 Allied soldiers; 8700 of those being Australian and 2779 New Zealanders.

Possible Campaign Story: You're a young ANZAC soldier and this is your first taste of war. Arriving on the beach you work your way through the area in a series of missions. Countless of your friends are slaughtered and the battles are tough. No spoilers, but the ending will be depressing as hell and really hit home the realities of war.

Details of the war: The war started when North Korea invaded South Korea. Fearing the worldwide spread of communism, The United States joined in to aid the South Koreans. It is estimated up to 5 million people killed, with only 50,000 of those being American soldiers.

Possible Campaign Story: A young American marine in his quest for glory, fighting against those darn commies. With over 50 battles to choose from, as well as a few naval battles there is a lot of history to draw from.

Details of the war: North Vietnam and the Viet Cong wanted to unify under a communist regime. The rest of Vietnam and The United States did no want this to occur, and were fighting to stop the spread of communism. Lasting 20 years, over 3 million people were killed, including 58,000 American soldiers.

Possible campaign story: You could say Call of Duty has already done Vietnam, with appearances in Call of Duty: Black Ops. However I would like to see a full fledged Vietnam campaign.Because of the large time spread of the war, the story could start anywhere. Be it an over zealous American in the late 50s wanting to get involve, or a more pacifist solider in the 70s drafted into a war. He isn't sure he agrees with the war until he sees the horrors committed by the Viet Cong, maybe he falls in love with a local girl to boot! There could be naval battles, jungle warfare, napalm attacks and helicopter rescues.

Sierra Leone Civil War (23 March 1991 – 18 January 2002)

Details of the war: With so many brutal wars in Africa, there are endless possibilities. However, I decided on the Sierra Leone war because of how much I want to slaughter assholes who forced children to become slave soldiers. It began when RUF rebels tried to overthrow Sierra Leones Joseph Momoh government. Battles were fought over areas rich in diamonds, and this war was the setting of the film Blood Diamond. This war left over 50,000 people dead.

Possible campaign story: Beginning with Operation Palliser, you play as a British solider bought in to evacuate foreigners Upon arrival you witness first hand the RUF brutalities. While the rest of your squad leaves you stay on to help the locals fight against the rebels. Work through the campaign fighting rebels, liberating child soldiers and preventing kidnappings.
