Wait What? YouPorn Actually Has eSports Teams???
If you didn't know that, then you are probably among the majority of people. Which is totally okay, but indeed they do! In fact, they have been around since early December 2014. Their primary focus is on fighting games such as Super Smash Bros Melee, [Mortal Kombat X](tag:2764773) and Ultra Street Fighter IV. And they don't stop there, they even have two Counter-Strike: GO teams and a European Evolve team. They have been in plenty of pretty big tournaments as well such as: Gamergy 2014, Gamergy 2015, CEO 2015, EVO 2015, HTC Throwdown 2015, Paragon 2015, EGX 2015, Red Fight District 2015, Milan Games Week 2015, Kakutop 3, Street Fighter Grand Battle 2015
Okay, Okay, Cool Story, Now Why Are They Banned?
Yeah, I know you guys just want to hear the juicy information on why the provocative team is being spanked--I mean yanked so let me cut to it. ESL is cutting all ties to Team YP because their primary sponsor is an adult pornography site. It's literally as simple as that. In a desperate attempt to save the teams from being banned, Team YP appealed to ESL about rebranding their team name in a way that it doesn't refer to YouPorn in any way. ESL strictly prohibits any affiliations with pornographic sponsors and say it's not a new rule. In fact, ESL had this to say to Venturebeat.com:
“Advertising pornography is not legal in the markets we operate in, and the vast majority of partners we’re working with have strict ‘no drugs, no alcohol, no pornography’ rules that we’ve contractually taken on board. These aren’t new rules but ones that have been in our rulebooks for a long time. We have spoken to Team YP manager earlier this year, and in that conversation we’ve explained the situation and rules in detail and offered to look for potential alternatives in a bigger group. At the same time, we’re consulting with our legal teams about this. We will inform the team and the management as soon as we have any updates.”
My Thoughts On The Ban
I understand everything I stated above and it makes a perfect amount of sense. The only thing I don't personally agree with is how much Team YP is being shrugged off. They even offered to rebrand their team name without YouPorn being shown anywhere. Not only that but they even made sure that people who looked up Team YP would have a "Safe for work" site where they don't have to worry about their affiliations. I think that's a pretty cool first step and believe that they shouldn't be banned. The team has clearly played at many events before, and something as small as an affiliation shouldn't destroy a bunch of teams in eSports. They should, however, try to shed the YouPorn label on most of their stuff though because rules are rules.
Pornographic affiliations truly screwed over these teams, but I am sure they can work something out with ESL. Everything is still up in the water at this point, but hopefully, they will come to a full conclusion soon.
What do you all think? Should they be banned for such a reason?
