Ah, Mario. Arguably the most popular video game character of all time, Mario has starred in over 200 games since his debut as Jump Man in the original Donkey Kong. The famous plumber has come a long way, and, with that, he has battled his fair share of enemies. Some enemies appear more ruthless and challenging than others; however, there are some that stand out among the rest.

Though some of the characters on this list may not pose much of a threat, it’s their look and presence that make them different and very creepy. For this list, I’ve picked out and ranked seven Mario enemies who I feel are the scariest to fight. Check out my list below!

7. Mr. I

To put it simply: Mr. I is a giant eyeball. Mr. I first appears in Super Mario 64 mostly as a wall to block Mario from getting around him. You can spot him in the Big Boo’s Haunt level. Mr. I also makes an appearance in quite a few of the Mario Party games including 2, 3, 5, and 8. The way you beat him is to run around him until he gets very dizzy. This will make him shrink down to size and disappear. He’s not a difficult enemy to deal with, but he’s one you can’t avoid either.

6. The Sun

Boy, what a pain in the ass this Mario enemy is. He is definitely one of the toughest enemies Mario has had to deal with. The Sun is utterly terrifying to look at. I mean, look at that face! He’s mad all the time!

First seen in Super Mario Bros. 3, the Sun follows Mario throughout an entire level in Desert Land. However, if Mario obtains the P-Wing, the player can actually use this item to fly Mario up high in the sky to complete the level while avoiding the sun completely.

5. Chain Chomp

Here is yet another large and terrifying Mario enemy. A cross between a dog and a shark, the chain chomp has become a staple in the Mario lore. This enemy has appeared in multiple games, including his very first appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3. The only way of destroying a chain chomp is by ground pounding the pole it’s attached to or running into it utilizing the star power.

4. Masked Ghoul

Who is that... Jason Voorhees? Believe it or not, that’s exactly what the creators of Super Mario Land 2 were going for. This enemy can be found in the Pumpkin Zone. The masked ghoul is not hard to beat — in fact, all you have to do is jump on it like you would any goomba. However, no one can take away the fact that this enemy is supposed to resemble Jason freaking Voorhees!!! If that’s not scary enough, then I don’t know what is.

3. Phanto

Just look at that mask. A Mario enemy whose face is half white/half red cannot be taken lightly. Phanto’s sole purpose in the game is to guard the key and prohibit Mario from taking it. Phanto only attacks Mario when he grabs the key inside a secret room found in nearly every level. This enemy’s only appearance is in Super Mario Bros. 2. The only way to take down Phanto is if Mario becomes invincible by collecting star power.

2. The Eel

“Can the eel come out to play?” This giant horrifying eel can be found in any Jolly Roger Bay level in Super Mario 64. The moment I first laid eyes on this creature of the deep as a child, it simply terrified me. The eel is seen hiding in his hole, minding his own business while waiting for something to approach. As soon as Mario gets closer, the eel sticks its head out ready to snatch up its prey!

The purpose of startling the eel is to retrieve the star that can found attached to its tail. All Mario has to do is swim close enough to grab the star. This is not easy, however, because this is no ordinary eel. It’s a giant electric eel that will shock Mario the second he touches it. The eel is by far one of the scariest (and largest) enemies that Mario has had to deal with over the years; however, nothing comes close to the scariest enemy Mario has had to face. Check out my number one choice below.

1. The Mad Piano

A man-eating piano? Yeah, you can bet that’s my number one choice. Not only did I take piano lessons as a kid, but I also played my favorite N64 game of all time called Super Mario 64. You may have heard of it. Anyway, the moment I entered the room and walked closer to the piano, I did not expect to see what I saw. A piano trying to eat Mario has to be one of the scariest moments to experience in any Mario game.

The only purpose of the piano in this game is for it to protect one of the eight red coins found in the level. After collecting it, technically you never even have to venture into this room again. But nothing will ever take away the very first time I saw a piano try to eat Mario. I posted a video down below so you can check out this menacing piano, found only in Big Boo’s Haunt.

So those are just some of the scariest Mario enemies I have seen in his universe. What are some of your scariest Mario enemies? Were there any that I missed? I’d like to hear your thoughts in the comments section below!
