Films based on video games frequently spark concern among fans. Entries such as 'Hitman', 'Agent 47', 'Super Mario Bros.' and 'Mortal Kombat' (both of them), among many others, are perceived as projects that have deeply tarnished the genre's reputation.

But, like always, there is hope; this year mainly in two films: '[Assassin's Creed](tag:437814)' and 'World of every medieval fantasy movie ever made... sorry, Warcraft'. 'Assassin's Creed' has been a particularly troubling project because, despite its stellar cast including Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, the uncertainty of whether it would ever become a reality has been a burden in the film since the beginning.

Now, those worries can be thrown out the window, because the first trailer for the film has been released and it's, in my opinion, quite impressive. Check it out for yourself:

In addition to that, 20th Century Fox has released the film's first official poster, highlighting the games' iconic "Leap of Faith":

The film will tell the story of death row inmate, Callum Lynch, who is hooked into the Animus to relieve memories of his 15th-century ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha.

The film is supposed to take place in the same universe as the video games, opening an incredibly interesting dynamic for both mediums. Will Desmond be referenced in any way? One thing's for sure: Some familiar faces will pop up, as confirmed via the game's official Twitter account:

The film is directed by Justin Kurzel and stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. It will be released on December 21st, 2016.
