The famed gaming auteur and mastermind behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise has come out to talk to us about his next project. Hideo Kojima has gone through a rough patch in his career with the controversy that surrounded his departure from Konami following everything that happened with [Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain](tag:2683985). But all of that is behind him and he appears excited for the future.
Late last year, Hideo Kojima set up his new studio, once more called Kojima Productions, and started work on a brand new exclusive PS4 title with the backing of Sony. We don't know too much about the game, but a recent interview with Famitsu gives us an idea of what the auteur has in mind.
Hideo Kojima Talks Life After Metal Gear Solid & His New Game
First, a little context: In an interview with Gamespot in late February, Kojima made the following and first statement about his next project:
I want to do something that gives a lot of freedom and interactivity. Like I did in the past, I want to make something that has a very strong, dramatic story...
...Sony is supporting us to make a big game that’s edgy with a strong story that gives the player a lot of freedom, with new elements, and I don’t know if that’s possible. But we’ll see.
It's extraordinary that the developer already has an idea in place, though Famitsu pointed out that Kojima Productions is still in its infancy and is more than likely not making any significant progress on the game just yet.
What Has Kojima Been Up To?
When asked about what life has been like after his departure from Konami, Kojima stated that he wanted to take some time off, but if he did that his life’s tempo would go out of whack and no one would forgive him. Therefore, he jumped straight into working on his next game.
"I’ll need about a year to warm up. We’re currently in the temporary office and have made only the logo and web page."
However, while things appear to be moving slowly, Kojima was quick to establish a work flow.
“Well, we made this company on December 16, right? Even taking that into account, we already had a game plan on December 18. That’s because there are lots of things I want to do and lots of things I want to try to do.”
“Currently, we have a webpage and a logo and are in a temporary workspace.”
Speaking of the logo, when asked about its design, Kojima stated:
“I can’t say anything yet, but there is a secret to the logo. It has a very cool body, and we even have plans to turn it into a figure.”
But at the moment, Kojima is focusing on establishing the basic studio infrastructure, which takes time, and Kojima Productions is still in its hiring and setting up shop phase.
So, About This New Game...
Famitsu then moved on to his next project and inquired whether Kojima had already established a game plan for his next title.
“It’s a great game,” Kojima replied. “Currently,” he continued, “I’m coming up with the plot, the characters and the game system and whatnot. Since there are substantially new elements [in the game concept], we have to test and try things out. It’s not like I’m just thinking about this in my head. While we’re testing things, I’m having Shinkawa draw characters and rough illustrations.”
He means Yoji Shinakawa, Kojima's long time collaborator and illustrator of such beautiful things:
Seeing as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain saw Kojima move to open world game design, Famitsu were curious as to whether his next project would also be open world:
“I don’t believe I said previously that this would be open world, right? ...I didn’t say that it would be open world...
“While not to say that it’s open-world, users who enjoy today’s AAA games (The Division and Uncharted, etc.) will be able to easily enjoy it. When it is announced, you might think ‘that’s not that outstanding,’ but you’ll understand when you see it and play it. The genre is action.”
But Will There Be Guns, Kojima?
“There might be guns shooting... There might not be guns, though.” When pressed further about the game’s genre, he said, “Action, it’s action, perhaps. Even if we changed the engine, I’d want the good feeling of action to remain.”
Kojima loves his action in video games, so we're sure that this will continue.
VR & Looking Forward To The Future
Not only did Kojima express excitement about what the future held in store for him and his production team — “I have the same feeling that I did when I made the first Metal Gear,” he said, explaining that there was a bit of uneasiness as well as excitement as to whether people will actually play the game — he also expressed excitement about the future of video game development.
“I want to make something with VR, but right now we don’t have anyone. I think VR holds the key to game development.”
Well Kojima, we're excited to see what you can do with it. As always, he signed off with:
“I don’t yet know when we can announce it. But please look forward to when we do.”
