Have you ever wanted more from a video game series that has already ended? This desire led to my discovery of several fan games. The four fan games that I chose for this list all have a high level of polish that allows them to stand side by side with the games that inspired them. Please keep in mind that I have disqualified mods and ROM hacks.

Mother 4

Mother creator Shigesato Itoi has expressed that there are no plans for a new game in the series but the fans weren't having any of that! Mother 4 is a fan-made Mother 3 sequel set in Pleiades, an idealized, vintage conceptualization of the United States.

Mother 4 however, is in no way a retread as it has its own unique features such as a PSI ability that can be used outside of battle to read NPC's minds. Mother 4 hasn't been released yet but there is a development blog that you can keep up with while you wait.

Merry Gear Solid 2

Merry Gear Solid 2 is a Christmas-themed parody stealth game set in a fictional Metal Gear universe. Merry Gear Solid 2 for the most part functions just like a Metal Gear game except that getting seen does not trigger an alert phase, but instead results in a game over.

What I really like about Merry Gear Solid 2 is the humor which makes constant references to the Metal Gear series and Christmas. Merry Gear Solid 2 can be enjoyed without playing the original but to get the most out it I recommend playing the first Merry Gear Solid game.

Legend of Princess

Have you ever wondered what Zelda II: The Adventure of Link would look like if it was more in line with the rest of the series? Then, Joakim Sandberg's Legend of Princess is for you. Legend of Princess is a 2D action game that features items, characters, and gameplay inspired by The Legend of Zelda series.

What I find most notable about Legend of Princess is despite being a 2D action game it still has the same puzzles and exploration you'd expect from an official Legend of Zelda game. Legend of Princess might be a short game but it does have replayability since you can choose a different pair of items each time you play.

Mega Man Battle Network Chrono X

If you miss the Mega Man Battle Network series as much as I do then, this game will put a smile on your face. Mega Man Battle Network Chrono X is a fan-made sequel to Mega Man Battle Network 6 which aims to be the bridge between Mega Man Battle Network 6 and its epilogue.

What sets Mega Man Battle Network Chrono X apart from the other Mega Man Battle Network games is the ability to battle and trade with other players online. Mega Man Battle Network Chrono X hasn't been released yet but there is a demo available for download.
