The long awaited Witcher 3: Wild Hunt expansion Blood and Wine is finally here, being released just over a week ago. Fans worldwide are marvelling over the magnificence of the DLC, with it being hailed the largest ever but is this true?
How Large Is It?
The Blood and Wine DLC takes players to the duchy of Toussaint. An area known in the game world for its natural beauty, and simple lifestyle. It adds over 30 hours of gameplay. Breaking that down even further there are; over 90 new quests, 40 new points of interest, 14000 lines of dialogue, 30 new weapons and 20 new monsters. There is definitely a lot to do!
According to some down right amazing calculations by Redditor m051293, the new area is around the same size as Ard Skellig, at around 2.4 miles squared. To compare, he also worked out that Novigrad & Velen are 5.8 kilometres squared. Other calculations have the area measuring up to 4 miles squared. Whether it is 2.4, or 4, this is a lot of land mass to explore.
So how does it compare to other impressively large DLC releases?
Far Harbor - Fallout 4
Far Harbor takes the player into the desolate and dangerous islands across the sea. It has been described by gamers as "what Fallout 4 should have been" - that's a big call. The best thing for me is that it brings back the skill checks seen in previous Fallout games, finally! Far Harbor adds an estimated 20 hours of gameplay including; 34 new quests, over 40 new characters, three new factions and 45 new points of interest.
Far Harbor is the largest of all Fallout DLCs. Compared to the Fallout 4 Map, Far Harbor has around 20% the amount of land mass. With Fallout 4 measuring around 43 square miles in size, this makes Far Harbor's size around 8.6 square miles. Depending on who you talk to, that's 2-4 times bigger in size than Toussaint. Not that size matters though, right ladies?
Shivering Isles - The Elder Scrolls IV:Oblivion
Shivering isles is an amazing landmass with two distinct areas. The bright and colourful Mania and the dark and dreary Dementia. It brings a distinct new look from the base game, and at the time was an absolute feast for the eyes. The largest Elder Scrolls add-on to date, Shivering Isles added; over 30 hours of gameplay, 38 new quests, 55 points of interest and 20 new spells.
The Shivering Isles Map was massive for the time at around 1/4 of the size of the original Oblivion game map. With Oblivion's map estimated to me 16 square miles, this makes the Shivering Isles map around four square miles in size. Again, while the gameplay is not as long as Blood and Wine (only just) it seems that the girth of the land is much bigger ;).
Secret Armory Of General Knoxx - Borderlands
Introducing the Parched Fathoms! A world that, well, looks exactly like the rest of the game. The Secret Armory Of General Knoxx was the third, and largest, expansion for Borderlands. With over 10 hours of gameplay it also added 44 new missions, three new vehicles, five new NPCs and six new bosses.
This DLC brings new locations to Borderlands and includes the T-Bone Junction, The Crimson Tollway and The Ridgeway. While there a lot of new areas, none of them are overly big. While I don't have an exact measurement, a quick glance alone makes it obvious that the size of these maps aren't even close to competing against the Blood and Wine map size.
As we can see, while Blood and Wine not might have the largest map, it makes up for it in other areas. Like a man with a large car and great sense of humour. The sheer amount of missions and hours of gameplay are sure to rival the best DLC to date, and give gamers a great experience, for a great price.
