E3 was held as usual this year in Los Angeles, allowing tons of video game developers and publishers to showcase their new games, consoles, and more. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, which lasted three days, has come and gone, but it certainly didn't end without leaving a huge mark on the gaming world!
Gamers were treated to an early Christmas present in the form of tons of new game trailers, game demos, and a look at new hardware— such as the Xbox One S and the PlayStation VR. Of these new gaming goodies presented during E3, one has me especially excited; a new tournament fighter by the name of Injustice 2.
Created by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, Injustice 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us. Set after the events of the original Injustice, Injustice 2 follows the alternate timeline Batman and his team working to prevent the followers of Superman's regime from wreaking havoc, all the while protecting their earth from a new threat.
Players can take control of several hereos and villains from the DC Universe and have them fight in epic one-on-one battles. Each battle earns the victor and the loser new gear, which can be used to customize the appearance of characters, as well as upgrade their stats.
So far, the characters that have been confirmed include Supergirl, Batman, Gorilla Grodd, Aquaman, Superman, Flash, and Atrocitus. Characters like Harley Quinn, Black Manta, and Captain Cold are also rumored to be in the game.
However, there is one more character that is not only confirmed for the game, but has been in every trailer and gameplay video (except for the cinematic trailer). Who's that you ask? Well, he's a little hovering feline by the name of Dex-Starr.
Meet Dex-Starr: The Ferocious Feline Of The Red Lantern Corps!
Dex-Starr is a member of the Red Lantern Corps, and perhaps one of Atrocitus' (the RL Corps leader) most trusted allies. No...seriously. Dex-Starr can be seen hovering above Atrocitus in every battle, assisting him in defeating his enemies. No doubt he was put in there as a nod to DC's strange history.
Ed Boon hid a lot of awesome easter eggs in the first Injustice for comic book lovers to acknowledge, so it makes sense that he would put in a few in Injustice 2 as well. Still, Dex-Starr is such an obscure character, that even comic book fans might be confused as to why there's a cat hovering above one of the most deadly warriors of all time.
Who Is Dex-Starr?
Because he's such an obscure character, many might not know who Dex-Starr is. The only reason I know who he is is because I wanted to see if there were any more animal heroes out there besides Krypto and his super-posse (and even still I had to do some more research for this article)!
So why is it that a cat is the most trusted ally of a powerful, blood-thirsty warrior like Atrocitus? Well, Dex-Starr used to be just a normal house cat from Brooklyn, New York named Dexter.
Dexter belonged to a single woman who loved him and treated him kindly. One day, hos owner was murdered, and Dexter was thrown into a river by the murderer. Drowning, Dexter was saved by Atrocitus, who felt the anger and sadness within him. Atrocitus made Dexter a Red Lantern, giving him the new name of Dex-Starr and letting him join the ranks of the Red Lantern Corps. Though he may not look it, Dex-Starr is one of the most powerful Red Lanterns in the Corps, feeding off of the rage that lies within him. This rage gives him enough power to hold his own against an entire army!
Dex-Starr is like Rocket Raccoon in a lot of ways. They both love to fight, and they're both pretty good at it. The only difference is whereas Rocket Raccoon is a superhero, Dex-Starr is a ferocious, rage-driven villain who will stop at nothing to locate the person who murdered his beloved owner. So...I guess he's a lot like Kratos from God of War too...
Why Is Dex-Starr Even A Thing?
Comics are pretty weird, that's no secret. But an intergalactic space cat who fights with literal rage energy? That's super weird, even for comic books. Dex-Starr was actually supposed to be a joke by artist Shane Davis. Davis drew Dex-Starr in one of the panels for Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns, and he wasn't supposed to appear again.
However, comic book legend Geoff Johns, who was working on Final Crisis with Davis, wanted Dex-Starr to have a few more panels in the issue. And thus, DC Comic's weirdest Red Lantern was born!
The fact that Dex-Starr is in Injustice 2 really shows how much research Ed Boon and the creative team behind the game did for it! I would have loved to see him as his own character (because how crazy would that be?), but a companion for his leader Atrocitus also works. You can check out Dex-Starr, Atrocitus, and more when Injustice 2 releases sometime in 2017!
