E3 has come and gone for 2016 with many amazing titles either announced or showcased such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Battlefield 1, Prey, Quake Champions, Dishonored 2, Scalebound, etc. However for me the best game that was showcased was NetherRealm Studios' Injustice 2 which is said to hit shelves in 2017.

Now of course being a huge fan of the first game and the Mortal Kombat franchise, I was already hyped just from the announcement trailer but something has come up about the game that at first had me worried but the more Ed Boon talked about it and gave us details, the more excited I got for it and that is the new Gear System.

The Gear System is essentially (in my opinion) the most unique way of customizing your fighters in a tournament fighter. Rather than rely on just a select amount of pre-made skins to choose from, you can just make your own dream skin for your favorite characters. The best part? It's not just cosmetics. See after each fight, you are given loot drops and inside can feature different pieces of gear for your characters.

The gear categories featured in the game are head gear, chest gear, arm gear, leg gear, capes/back gear, and color sets. Ed Boon stated that one character has thousands and thousands of gear pieces to choose from, the game has twenty eight characters, so let's say the average number of gear pieces is two thousand, that would mean that there are over 56000 pieces to unlock in the game.

Oh my god...
Oh my god...

That is nuts. This can allow so many players to create their perfect hero however they want but like I said above, there is more to these gear pieces than looking awesome. Ranging from common to rare, each piece of gear also increases your character's stats which include strength, ability, health, and defense. Now this is the part that worries some people which I can understand: you meet a player online with better equipment and he could dominate you and that could end up being terrible. However I have faith in NetherRealm but I understand people's worries and so do they because Ed Boon was talking with IGN about online play and he did confirm a mode that basically levels the playing field but that leaves me wondering if in that mode we will only get the base versions of characters or will the looks of our upgraded characters transfer over? Only time will tell.

The new gear system worried me at first but now I am hyped because this new mechanic could set Injustice apart from other tournament fighters really redefine the genre; true there have been fighters with character customization such as Tekken Tag Tournament 2 but never has there been (to my knowledge) one with stat upgrades. If done right, the gear system could add a great layer of challenge and strategy online and offline. You can choose a character with high defense and low strength but your opponent chooses a character with high ability and low defense meaning his special moves are probably going to be deadly so you are going to need to be fast, really good at dodging, and definitely good at timing.

If Injustice 2 does this well, we could be seeing this type of mechanic in Mortal Kombat games, Street Fighter games, Soul Calibur, etc. Does this have the potential to completely break the online? Yes, definitely but like I said, I have faith in NetherRealm since they've always had good and balanced online play. So what do you all think of Injustice 2's Gear System? Do you think it will work? Do you think it will break the game? Let me know in the comments below! Hope you all enjoyed reading!
