It almost feels like it was all a dream. E3 2016 is now a week behind us and we are still trying to get our heads round all the magic. Whilst Microsoft wowed the world with not one but two new consoles, to everyone’s bewilderment Sony opted to focus solely on the games.

This came as quite a surprise as fans all over the world watched in anticipation of the long awaited PS4 Neo reveal that never came. But today, we have more news.

A patent for a new Sony controller with extra buttons has been found online. That’s right, it looks as if Sony are working on an all new iteration for one of their consoles. Found by NeoGAF user Kyoufu, you can see that the new controller (featured below) retains the same basic design and shape as its predecessors but with a few key changes.

What’s different?

The start and share buttons have been shifted from the centre to down under the D-pad on the left and the primary button down to the right. The touchpad in the centre has been stretched out to cover the entire central section and two new buttons have been added to the grips.

This should cater better for the competitive gaming markets, working in a similar way to the new Xbox One Elite controllers developed by Microsoft. It will also stop gamers from accidentally pausing games when things are getting a little heated. The increased size of the touch pad will allow for a much easier selection ability and will specifically help developers work with the controller.

The new position of the select and share buttons is interesting to say the least, will it be awkward to try and pause a game from there? I'm not really too sure but I guess we will wait and see. The increased size of the touch pad will predominantly cater best to developers so this makes me wonder whether this is a controller set to accompany the more powerful Neo.

Neo has already been rumoured to aim a lot of its new power toward the creative mind and is set to encourage new home grown indie titles to the network. This controller could certainly help do that.

Or, could we be looking at something new entirely? A rival for the Scorpio perhaps, I know Sony and I know that they will not take the arrival of the superior Scorpio lying down. The PS4 Neo will peak at around 4 teraflops whilst the Scorpio will peak at 6 teraflops. Sony will counter the Scorpio, but the method is still yet to be seen.

What do you make of the new controller?
