Every year, gamers are wowed by fantastic stories, relatable characters, and novel mechanics. But, let's be honest. Even the most story- or gameplay-centered player still enjoys being blown away by incredible visuals.
Whether it be a surreal, stylized environment or one so realistic you feel like you could step into the screen, visuals can elevate a game beyond the competition and give us playable environments we'll never forget. With that, here are the top five visually spectacular games coming to you soon.
You're riding a dragon — what more needs to be said?
Well, quite a bit, actually. When you're fighting a dragon on foot, it can definitely be big, but rarely is it a towering creature that looks like it could eat Godzilla as an appetizer. When you're riding a dragon, however, things can get much, much bigger. The dragon-riding mechanics have opened up some options for Platinum Games, and Scalebound takes full advantage of them, pitting you against some breathtakingly massive beasts that not only provide some innovative gameplay but incredible visuals as well.

4. 'Final Fantasy XV'
Let me preface this by saying that I have never played a Final Fantasy game in my life. But after watching the E3 demo, I was absolutely blown away. The scale was enormous, and the detailed visuals created one of the most real science fiction/fantasy environments I've ever seen in gaming. Everything from dust and dirt blasting into the air to the movement of the characters' hair felt natural to this supernatural reality. I may finally have to jump into Square Enix's flagship series.

Ever since the Arkham series brought Batman in all his glory to the masses, Marvel fans have been waiting for their contribution. At E3, it was finally revealed: Spider-Man would be coming to PS4, thanks to Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games. According to the company, all its footage was in-game on a current console — and what gorgeous footage it was. New York and the web-slinger truly come alive in what we've seen, and the level of detail is absolutely stunning. The textures on the Spidey suit are like nothing we've seen in a superhero game so far. Hopefully it's not the last entry into the genre Marvel has for us.
Release Date: TBA (GameStop has it listed as December 26, 2017, however)

2. 'Mass Effect: Andromeda'
Mass Effect has always provided some pretty gorgeous visuals, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is taking it even farther. All sorts of different worlds, spaceships, and alien creatures populate the game, and every bit looks incredible. Everything from the texture of an Asari's skin to a windswept desert looks and feels alive, and they make every one of us wish we could take a step out into the great unknown.

1. 'No Man's Sky'
Speaking of stepping out into the great unknown, No Man's Sky tops my list. Though the design is definitely very stylized, it's no less gorgeous as a result. Alien plant and animal life as well as geographic features and tech design all contribute to the most stunning upcoming game. The sheer beauty alone makes it an unmissable experience.
